Kordia abandons trans-Tasman cable plan

It would have been great to have 3 cables but now we've only got 2.

Kordia never had the funds or backing and it was only going to be a NZ to AU extension of the Aussie PPC cable that goes to Guam.

Pacific Fibre's cable is a much better offering and it's complete cable to the US (via Samoa).

samoa? So the samoan government have jurisdiction over part of the cable? What if they decided to censor the internet?

Actually, I think Ragnor is referring to the fact that Pacific Fibre has the potential to create spurs to Tonga and Samoa, if those governments chose to stump up the money for the spurs.

In effect, Kordia's proposed extension of PPC's OZ-Guam link was itself a spur. As Ragnor says, the Kordia cable was only a Oz-NZ link.

My understanding is the loop itself will not 'land' anywhere between NZ and the US, in the way that Hawaii does.

Given that the Pacific Fibre and Pacnet will both own a pair of fibres each in the new cable, you kinda in effect have three cables - it's just two have shared some establishment costs.
