I want to switch to 2Degrees from a Vodafone Contract, the problem is I'm unsure how it works with penalties. My 12 months contract is up on the 8th of August so do I switch over on the 8th or the 9th to avoid getting the $99 disconnection penalty?

All that info can be found on the Vodafone website. Find your plan information and somewhere there will be a link to early disconnection fees.

It is probably only of the order of $30 being so close to the end of your contract. Would pay to check though.

Right - depends on the plan you are on, but for so close to the end of your contract the early termination fees start at $15:

I meant if I wait till the 9th to switch and my contract is ended will VF try to charge me an extra month or something like that. Thought someone might have experience switching from contract. Do I need to ring VF and tell them or just get my number ported over to 2Degrees once I put the 2Degrees Sim in?

the way I understand it works and how I have been told by 2 degrees customer service is that once you apply to port your VF number over to them they deal with it all and you do not need to contact VF at all. Just get a 2d sim and sign up online and you can do the number port there. I would imagine that VF will send you a final bill for whatever outstanding line rental and charges you have incurred, but I don't think you will get charged for another month.

Might be worth cancelling your direct debit with Vf if you have one though....

Personally I would go for the 10th so there was no chance of an argument. Otherwise try your luck with 777. Don't cancel your account until you have successfully ported your number to 2degrees.

bazbo has it bang on for the process of porting. 2Degrees handles it all for you.

The only unknown is what they would do if you break contract a few days early - johnr could you enlighten us please?

As I see it, it could go 2 or 3 ways:
#1 - they credit you back for the remainder of the billing month, and then sting you with an early disconnection fee (if you disconnect early)
#2 - all is sweet, no credit back and no early disconnection fee (if you disconnect early)
#3 - they credit you back for remainder of billing month (if you disconnect after the 9th)

If you wait until the 9th, they will bill you for another month, but they will also credit you back any unused portion of that month (going on past experiences I've had with Vodafone). As bazbo said, kill any direct credit you have set up with them a.s.a.p. (might already be too late to miss the new billing cycle), as it is easier to sort out payments with them manually rather than trying to get them to credit you back.

At this stage you'll probably get 2 bills from Vodafone, a final bill up to the point of disconnection and then a second one with any credit owing on it. I've had this several times in the past with them, but I think both were on their previous billing system.

My understanding is that you need to cancel your contract with the operator you port from. The new operator isn't allowed to do that on your behalf. The 2degrees site seems to confirm this -
"If you get a bill you might need to go back to your old mobile company once you have transferred your number and check that they've closed your account properly. 2degrees legally can't do that bit for you." [see 2degrees 'Help & Support' - 'Bring your number details']

I agree with the earlier posters in that VF should prepare a final bill to close the account and the final monthly fee will be adjusted for only the portion of the month that you actually used. Hopefully then you won't have to chase them for a credit back!

Just don't pay your 2nd to last bill. This is what Telecom told me to do when I disconnected an account recently.
