jpollock: I think you'll find that NZ ISPs route _local_ (Wellington) traffic through the US (try the SpeedNet test to Wellington from TCL in Wellington). Routing Australian traffic through Florida isn't that bad.
Since ISPs can't agree on interexchange agreements, they just leave it up to the US backbone to sort out.
Edit: Wait, 300ms mobile ping to Australia, and it's bad?!
