I'm very confused. I have an android phone (X5) from 2degrees.

I live in an area where 2degrees uses Vodafone's network (like most of the land area
of NZ, actually).
If I turn data roaming off it looks like I can't receive MMS from other
2degrees phones.

Is this expected behaviour?
Do MMS's always count as data, so (presumably) cost whatever your current data rate
is costing at the time to receive?

Data Roaming needs to be on with 2degrees as you are "roaming" on the vodafone network

MMS (send or receive) uses data, but it goes on a different APN (mms) and is not charged as data, but per message. Receive is not charged at all. International roaming is different; there you are charged for the data used, both sending and receiving.

My Experience with MMS is that you need Data roaming enabled as MMS a transmitted through the Packet Data Network. However MMS are treated differently to Data and you are not charged to receive MMS and the cost of sending is included in the 50c cost to send a MMS.

A late followup, don't know how you got on with this. You definitely need it on (data and for you roaming). If you are trying not to use data on your phone, or want to control when you do, download an app called APNdroid. It will change the APNs so there's no data connection. It will leave the MMS APN alone, so that side of things still works.

Since I asked this a long time ago, I wonder if anything has changed.

We have a nexus 5x android 8.1.0 and it still has problems sending and receiving MMS.

I've checked the two degrees website for the settings, which are all correct.
It notifies reception of the MMS, but sits forever (probably not) downloading.

Any way I can diagnose this?

turn on data roaming. it will work from there.

Well no...

For the avoidance of doubt, as the lawyers say, in Settings, we have
Mobile data - Access data using the mobile network. ON
Roaming - connect to data services when roaming. ON
A little triangle with an H - or sometimes a 3G - near its top left and a capital R in the status bar at the top
And in Messages, a circle with 227kb under it and a throbber circling.

That's why I wonder if there is any way to diagnose this...

Right, ok, was going off where we were at with the thread.

What you describe is slightly different. Will probably simply need a reset from the backend.

Tried reaching out to their mobile helpdesk?

Update: the message I sent last night arrived this morning. I'm starting to think about carrier pigeons and polaroid photos.
But I tried again this morning and the MMS arrived about five minutes later. Maybe the atmosphere was slower yesterday...

@ajbw If your handset advises ' message sent ' then a major delay in the delivery of the MMS / PXT is not related to your side

The first step in a MMS / PXT been delivered is a SMS (person can't see) telling the handset a MMS / PXT has arrived and please go collect it
