mobile provider Econet lodged a complaint with the Commerce Commission, alleging Vodafone was engaged in anti-competitive practices by cutting prices and locking customers into two-year deals.

(Taken from stuff.co.nz)

Is this like a joke or what?

Contracts have been out since Bell south days the dawn of mobile on 025 TCNZ

Bigger joke if the CC accepts the complain, coming from an entity with no participation in the market - as yet.

I read that artical and it looks if Econet chief project director Tex Edwards has a beef with Vodafone owning or having a monopoly on the GSM 900 spectrum here in NZ - likes its Vodafones fault they Vodafone bidded for a frequancy and the NZ goverment sold the rights to Vodafone!

Just means that for them (Econet) have to cut a deal with Vodafone and looks if instead of putting there money where there mouth is lets go cry to Commerce Commision.

Put up or shut should be the cry for Econet! invest in your own network!

Freeloaders they are.

Heres a idea go buy WOOSH

I find what I was looking for in my archives http://www.comcom.govt.nz/PublicRegisters/ContentFiles/Documents/479.pdf

Public Version ISSN NO. 0114-2720 J5509 Commerce Commission Decision No. 479 Determination pursuant to the Commerce Act 1986 in the matter of an application for clearance of a business acquisition involving: VODAFONE MOBILE LTD NZ and 900 MHZ SPECTRUM

Its a great read from Nov 2002 how the commerce commision talks about new players like Econet who actually did not bid on spectrum at the time and the future mobile market in NZ.

Edwards is an idiot, it's as simple as that. A 3rd mobile network in NZ would be great but Edwards is going to do nothing but complain rather than actually get on and do things.

I would suspect the Com Com will do nothing but laugh at him over this latest story, Vodafone acquired Telstra's original GSM spectrum in return for their virtual network business and the E-GSM spectrum they acquired in 2002 was purchased at auction. Both of these purchases were approved by the com com.

Vodafone are spoilt owning so much GSM spectrum (almost 3x the 900 bandwidth that most operators overseas have) but it's not as though it was handed to them on a plate..
