Domain name expired yesterday, client paid this morning

Hi all

went to do some work on a customers site and found it wasn't there, looked it up on Whois and it expired and was cancelled yesterday, rang customer, yep he already knew and paid for it this morning.

My question is how long before the site reappears

the site is hosted with kiwiwebhost and the domain is registered with iserve, all of which are bits of orcon now.

and i am on orcon, so i assume i would be one of the first to see the site when it reappears?

I just want some idea, so i can make sure the customer paid the right thing

do a whois on the domain and see if its Active 1st now..

the .nz name servers are reloaded every couple of hours if I remember right and then delay in others knowing about it

There is no definite time that "it will be working" but within 5-6 hours things should be ok.

You would have to ask them. You will see it as soon as its updated if using their DNS.

Time to find a new industry!

Yep, been checking the whois every once in a while, still says cancelled.

Guess i'll give them a ring later this afternoon

Then it has not been uncancelled

As soon as Orcon uncancel it then it will show as active in the whois . Then you'll have to wait until the .nz Name servers update and then wait until other name servers see the change.

Ok then, how long after being paid does it take Orcon to uncancel the domain on average.

I would say depends how many times the customer calls them to complain...

Its funny how people often leave it till the last minute with domain renewals. The exipry date isn't a due date, but the date the domain is disconnected and becomes unusable.

How did they pay for it? If they paid by credit card, it shoudl have been reactivated instantly. If they paid by direct credit, it coudl take a day to clear and then you may need to wait for their staff to check their bank statements, and then manually renew it. ALthough that would depend on how their systems do it.

I don't know how he paid, when i had a look at the whois info, all the info is that of the previous owner, but oddly he did receive a renewal reminder, he just didn't get around to paying it on top

Just fired an email off to orcon, hopefully i'll know something, otherwise I'll get the customer to chase it up

We see it happening all the time. We had an alert system added so our helpdesk gets an email a week before someone's domain expires - this allows us to call/email them a gentle reminder that the end is nigh (unless they renew then all is well)

Heck its still not back up or uncancelled on whois, definitely going to have to find out how the client paid.
