Just had a thought about VOIP. I notice that my Orcon connection dies somestimes and requires a reboot of router to get it going again. It doesn't happen a lot say once or twice in a month. Moving ones Telephone  onto a system like this makes me wonder how trustworthy is this. If the ADSL circuit goes down and no one notices then effectively your telephone system is down and if you are waiting for a call it would be a right pain. Is there any indication that Orcon will provide a more guaranteed service for those with the new phone system. If they are hoping to persuade people to move to non Telecom system of phones they will have to provide at least 5 9's reliability.
Questions
1. Do other Orcon users notice their ADSL stopping and require a reboot of router to get access again

2. Maybe I should set up some kind of ping check that could alert me if the system goes down. Anyone have an ideas about the best way to do this. I dont really want to leave my PC running just so I can check circuit and then even if I did how would I generate an alert with no network?

My last outage of my VOIP was 3 months ago. I have found in my case it often comes down to hardware. My router and IP phone are now rock solid but I used to have nightmares with my previous ATA's (VOIP telephone adapters)

I found that the ISP outages were not the problem, 90% of the outages were caused by the hardware at my end.

Cheers.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

We have a genius at home (As of Tuesday) and the router itself seems much more stable than the Netgear it replaced, which required almost daily reboots.

Up and running. They actually cut over at midnight Monday but the gear didn't arrive until Tuesday afternoon.

When it did arrive tho, we just plugged it all it and everything worked. Just had to log in and config a better SSID and password for the wireless (The default is the device serial)

Interesting they must be enabling sequentally. Did you get an email from them saying it was cutting over or did you just notice the old ophone was dead.

It's my flatmates account, I'm not sure if she got an email or not, but based on her surprise the line was down before the kit arrived, I'm guessing not

Can anyone advise what DC Voltage the Genius runs on  ?? thinking
how it could be powerd from a large SLA battery during a mains power failure as
many routers are 12volts DC

Cheers

The DECT phone of Genius would work on an SLA but if you hook up any other analogue devices to the ATA they're probably not going to work while running off a battery (something that's the case with most ATA's)

Good $deity. People put up with some big pile of bad designed products and services. Just looked at my Cisco router and it's been up for 20 days - last time it went out was because of power outages around Wellington.

I don't look after the connection here. If I did we would have a very different setup.

Can't really compare an expensive enterprise CPE to a residential CPE.

It's not "enterprise" - it's SME. But "residential" shouldn't have to equate to "badly designed, overheating, low memory, bad system software" that runs in some cheap brands around.

Why would that be?
