I don't believe Genius has any form of call transfer feature. Have you seen this mentioned somewhere?

Normally you hit the 'flash' button on the handset, then dial the number of the other phone.

But I don't believe they have setup extension dialling - because this is not a 'phone system' after all.

So long dial it is - but I don't recall seeing call transfer as a free feature either. Why would anyone want such an antiquated function?

It's actually a feature of the DECT GAP standard. When a GAP compatible devices registers with a DECT base station it's allocated a handset number and many GAP phones support transferring the call to other DECT phones registered to the same base station. A number of DECT phones on the market support this, but I've seen no mention anywhere of Genius saying they support this. The fact registering a GAP compliant handset with Bob2 isn't even supported by iiNet means it's potentially not a feature they bothered developing.

It is a right pain. If the r phone rings and I answer downstairs and find call is not for me I should be able to transfer call to another extension elsewhere in the house.. If it's a feature of DECT then it should be enabled

Going back a few steps - have you actually seen this feature promoted at all by Orcon and you need help using it, or is it something you are just wishing existed? I haven't read the Genius manual because I don't have one, but I've never heard Orcon claim the feature exists.

If the feature is important to you I'd suggest you go out and buy a pack of compatible DECT handsets that support this feature on the base set and plug them into the RJ11 port of the Genius. This will give you the functionality you require between these phones.

No have not seen it advertised but would have thought that such a faerie would be standard. What use it's a phone system with multiple extensions if you cannot switch calls between extensions

It's no different to the standard home now where you can't transfer calls between phones on a PSTN line. It's worth remembering that you can register multiple phones with Genius but they're not "extensions" as such, they are merely additional phones, in the exact same way you can plug multiple phones into a regular PSTN line.

The ability to do this does come with some DECT phones, and right now on a PSTN like if want the capability you can buy phones to do this. Genius is no different as these phones can be plugged into the RJ11 port.

No out it's not the same as a pstn system. I used to have extensions in every room.If I answered in any room and wanted someone else to take call they could just pick up any extension and take over call but I cannot do that with Genius.

If you buy a pack of DECT phones that support GAP and a base unit that supports call transfer, and plug the base into the RJ11 port you'll have the exact same functionality as the PSTN.

I think people are misunderstanding what Ron is trying to achieve here.  If you answer a call on one handset, and it's for someone else, you can't just tell the other family member to pick up the call on another handset like you do with normal phone lines.  We're not talking about "transferring" the call as such.  The call terminates the moment the handset that answered the call hangs up and the other handset doesn't connect to the conversation at all.

You therefore have to take the handset physically to the person, even if there is another paired dect handset sitting next to them.

It's a PITA when two people pick up the phone at the same time and the one that actually 'gets' the call hangs up, thinking the other has it.

Exactly. As for the suggestion that I plug the DECT into the Genius modem if I was going to do something like that I would plug a decent walkaround phone into the Genius because even the cheapest of these phones would give better coverage around the home. The Genius DECT phones give quite bad communications once you move more than a few feet away from the base unit.
I am still toying with the idea of disconnecting my old house wiring from the external line and plugging that into teh Genius unit. That way I would have good reception all over the house and could still have walk around reception from one of the housephones that has that facility.
Has anyone else tries using the house wire for connections?

FYI when I say DECT phone I don't mean a Genius phone if that's what you're thinking. DECT is a phone standard for cordless phones.

If you want the functionality you desire your options are to buy a 3rd party DECT handset combo and base station that supports this feature and plug it into the RJ11 port, or wire your home wiring into the RJ11 port remembering to factor in the REN value and use any standard analogue phone.

Pairing 3rd party DECT phones isn't a supported scenario in Australia by iiNet so I doubt you'll see any development in this area.

My 2 cents worth here, but to transfer a call on a DECT phone to another registered to the same base:

First you usually press a key marked "Int", or on my DORO it's marked with two opposing triangle arrows, one above the other and shares the R key.

At this point you'll get some sort of internal dial tone, and the outside caller is held.

Then you press the number of the extension you want the call to go to. The extension numbers are usually displayed on the screen when the phone is idle, eg: 1 or 2. Sometimes you might see a base number also. eg; 1 1 = Base 1 Extension 1, or 1 2 = base 1 Extension 2. (may be Extension first then base)

Now you must wait for the extension to answer. ( I've ever seen blind transfer)

Tell the extension they have a call and hangup.

If the extension doesn't want the call, then they hangup and you're reconnected to the held outside caller.

I think you can conference 1 outside party and 2 internal but can't remember how, and all this varies slightly between manufacturers AND models. Hope this helps.

Dave
