So telecom allow me to recycle old deactivated sims, by calling up, stating the sim number, and they provision a new number to it. They even give $10 credit for it being a new sign up.

I have 40+ 2degrees sims here, all more than a year old and all definitely deactivated. Last time i called up 2degrees help desk I was told i couldnt reactivate them. Seems like a waste.

Are these now useless and can only be thrown in the bin? I slowly went through a few of these sims, throwing them at friends and telling them to try 2degrees, when the sims still worked that is, but seems they wouldn't like me to do that.
Just was reminded of this today when someone asked me if they could reactivate their old one, or if i had a spare.

That's the story that 2Degrees gave me about 4 months ago. Once the SIM has either been deactivated, or is dormant for more than a year, then it is merely junk.

I agreed, it does seem wasteful but presumably they see the admin required to reactivate it as more than what just selling a new SIM is worth. Given how cheap a new one is, they may be right.

It is a waste, and also possibly has lost them some customers. For instance when 2 degrees first started up I got a few of the free sim cards for my parents. They didn't use them, but now they had thought of switching, as they already had the card. But they couldn't use it, as it had been deactivated and couldn't be reactivated again. So they just decided to re top up with vodafone. Far easier and quicker for them.
