Well, I found a way to have a frustrating Monday morning - call Orcon about a menial enquiry that isn't anywhere on their FAQs!

Experience in last 24 hrs:
1. 30 mins on Sunday morning (9am a peak time?) to get Residential sales; no help.
2. 40+ mins so far to get business.....and then.......THE CALL DROPS!!! DROPS!!!

Orcon....new call centre and all...well....good for you. For now, I wonder about ending our relationship.

Orcon...are you calling Xtra, Slingshot, well, anyone else, to see how long it takes to get through to their helpdesk.

By your sense of time, I should live to be 3,000 years old.

Are you here to actually ask for help or just complain ?

No company is perfect....

The Orcon helpdesks are not being moved off-shore, just the accounts one I think (I havent had time to read the full info from them)

What is your menial question and someone (inc Orcon reps who use GZ) maybe able to help.

Hi there,

Thanks for the heads up.

I am simply wanting to transfer my hosting from Orcon to Weebly (i.e. free) and cancel the Orcon service. My menial question is whether the MX will still work given the domain name was bought from Orcon (that may sound silly, or be obvious, but I do not know nor can I risk mucking up my e-mail delivery).

Thanks to anyone who can help. I've put the Orcon experience behind me and if I can get a clear answer without having to call again that would be great.

Are you closing your account with Orcon when transferring hosting?

MX simply points to the server that will receive your emails. If you close your Orcon account and your email server is provided by them, then you probably should be thinking of using something else - free ones such Windows Live Domains or Google Apps, or paid services such as Office 365, Google Domains, etc.

In any case, using a hosted email service is much better than using your ISP.

You may aswell change the NS records of your domain across to Weebly and get them to run your DNS (if they do). You can then control your records directly from their control panel.

Thank you for this.

1. I am keeping the Orcon account (home internet, personal @orcon e-mail) but cancelling the monthly hosting bill for my website.
2. I want to point my domain over to Weebly and cancel the hosting service.
3. My concern; will this affect my website e-mail....that's what I need to know from Orcon.
4. There are no details/instructions on the Iserve.net.nz control panel which prompted me to make these fruitless calls.

If you use the Orcon hosting management and close your account you will have to have your DNS managed somewhere else (delegated by NS records you lodge with your registrar).

As suggested, either use what the new hosting provider... provides, or use a third party (such as Dyn.com).

Also, consider using a third party email service (as per my previous post) and you should be free to change personal ISPs as well.

Additional side note, you can't even ask menial questions on a Sunday - Business support is strictly 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

If Orcon or iServe is your registrar, you shouldn't need to move your nameservers as you can continue to use and pay for this service even after moving your hosting.

The problem is that the iServe interface only allows you to manage NS records, nothing else.

If you have a freebie iServer hosting account (which I don't know is available anymore), then you can use that to manage DNS records. Otherwise, too bad.

Quick look at the FAQ on Weebly and I couldn't see an option to transfer an existing domain only register new or setup existing to point there.

If Orcon/iServe doesn't give you an option to create A records that point elsewhere then I would recommend transferring to a NZ provider who does eg: Discount Domains, Domins 4 Less, Enlighten Domains etc.

Generally it costs you nothing to transfer to a different registrar for NZ domain names because your current registrar have already passed on the fee to the NZ registry, basically you've already paid until your NZ renewal date/time.

You just need the UDAI from when you registered the domain (or get a new one generated by Orcon/iServe) to begin a transfer to a new provider.

I would setup the website on the new hosting provider (weebly) first before transferring the domain and setting up the records in the domain admin panel on the new domain/dns provider.

Likely there will be some downtime, from a couple of hours to a day max, depending on TTL's etc.

You do zone file stuff inside the HMC, as it is hosting related, and the nameservers need to be pointed to iserve.net.nz. I think you get free access to the HMC via their free plan. At least that is how it was before orcon purchased it. The IDM is solely for domains and nameservers changes, not for zone edits
