We are increasing testing three-fold and need more Slingshot or Callplus customer volunteers. Help us to improve New Zealand broadband performance by volunteering to host one of our probes.

The probe is a bridged router with an 802.11n wifi on board that we encourage you to enable through our website.

Volunteers from all centres apart from Auckland and Wellington are needed, I'll update here when that changes

Is it possible (or allowed) to put other routers behind the TrueNet router? As long as all data is going through the TrueNet router, is it OK?

Don't Panic, the answer is 42 LOL

Accepted now, subject to address verification

The probe is a simple bridged router as far as you will see on your network, ie it is hardly visible and can have anything behind it, it does grab an IP address from DHCP. You can also use the 802.11n wifi - setup for that is on the TrueNet website

I have a funky router modem setup (RTA1320 + WRT54GL w/ tomato), but I'm sure I can set it all up correctly.

Is address verification just a letter sent out to my address with a code (similar to Trademe AV). After that, a router is sent out?

The TrueNet branded D-Link router doesn't take into account modem line attenuation and other stats, correct?
Is this type of data likely to be collected in the future if a modem/router was introduced as a test unit?

Would this type of data be of any use to you guys, other than, "you have crappy house wiring", or "you live in a cave 10km from an antiquated exchange"... type of thing?

We would love to get this data, but would need access to the modem, and that just seems too difficult. Yes it would enable a comparison that showed how much impact house wiring has by "normalising" the connection.

surely you could use wget or something on the router to pull it off the gateway?

Im just trying to think about how I could get a truenet on each internet connection since I set the gateway on things that I want to use my snap connection and have the dhcp server handing out the slingshot router as a default gateway. Is there no way to manually assign the IP that the truenet router operates on? I spose I could make reservations for the truenet boxes assuming they have real mac addresses on the bridges.

Is that a correct guess?

Or are they now a different/newer type than what is shown on the TrueNet website?

Do you have anything that does 10/100/1000?

Yes they are D-Link and they remain the same in appearance as on the website, but they are now the E4 variant, but are only 10/100. We have them on a few 100Mb/s connections and they perform well.

Volunteers still wanted in some regions on Slingshot. We have 41 to date and our target is almost 60

The catch is that we need probes in regions other than Auckland and Wellington. If you live anywhere else how about volunteering.

We are almost complete with Slingshot volunteers, we have 50 volunteers and only need a further 10, only in Christchurch and Hamilton now, but I would be pleased to have more from other regional centres if they apply.
