I'd like to gauge the general opinion of people here regarding the Freeview Adverts such as:

Some opinions so far.....

NZCrusader:
Would rather they just get to the point saying:

-Analogue shutting down soon.
-You will need either a Satelite dish for freeview SD or a UHF aerial for freeview HD. ( where coverage allows)
-You will also need a satelite or UHF receiver set up box for the tv.
-Some new TVs have freeview terrestrial receivers built in.
-You can get freeview equipment and info from these retailers / sites.......

End.

Would be more effective & informative than doing silly ads that look like they are targeting children.

Jaxson: I'm a big fan of those energy spot ads with the cold winter god from the Almighty Johnson TV show. As above, straight to the point and clear, with a human talking to you. They just pick a different topic every few weeks etc.

richms: Im not a fan of how they say it is going digital. Sorry, it went digital a very long time ago. It should be saying "obsolete analog is being switched off"

Bonus if they could use the regionalization to only show it on the analog services so that people who are not watching analog don't have to put up with the patronizing crap too.

I will forward this on to Freeview when we have a few replies, as I see this as an issue, people are very confused as to what is happening with TV signals and there is a lot of wrong info going around which is causing people to buy the wrong products, wasting money and time.

Fergus is a bit distracting... his appearance is somewhat... odd.

The message isn't bad though, I think that it doesn't also explain that you may need an aerial.

Fundamentally the advert conveys almost the right message.

Totally agree. Fergus would be more in place in an x-rated movie!

I agree with NZCrusader

They need to be simple and specific.
They need to spell it out to the average TV viewer who knows nothing about TV transmission - If you don't have a modern Freeview TV or a Freeview Set Top Box then after 31 Dec 2013 you won't be able to receive any TV. That would grab their attention.
Just telling them TV is going Digital is meaningless.

No kidding, and imagine how confused it'll make some "normal" people that are already on Freeview; they may think that they need to change their equipment a second time.

I think it's a cop out to say go to these retailers and they'll point you in the right direction. That hasn't necessarily been the case for quite a few people.

As has been said by others, digital is not coming, it's already here. The message should be more like analogue is going.

I'd also personally lay off the subtle sky comparison. Freeview gives you more channels, etc. Yes it does, not saying it doesn't, just that the driver should be now more fundamental, ie if you don't have freeview (or sky I guess), you won't be able to watch TV.

Some advertising mad men company has worked very hard to present this campaign. How about show the EPG when you mention it, instead of a jet or a whale etc, seriously? You need a degree of adult education input here, not just a marketing company.

Do any freeview boxes, sat or uhf/hd/terrestrial/dvb-t, have rf out?

I mean do you have to junk your old heap a s, just because analogue is being turned off?
If not, then stories like this are a bit hyped up.

Nope, a 1958 TV has been connected to Freeview: http://www.goingdigital.co.nz/oldesttelly

Edit: After reading more closely, it's a separate RF converter... but it's clearly still possible to connect an old RF-only TV.

The RF out ports on our Zinwell and Magic TV boxes seem to send the raw aerial signal through.

Most older "crap" tvs should still have the old composite RCA in though which most set top boxes will output to so I think even fairly old TV's will handle the signal from a freeview box?

Edit: I am now looking into advertising as a career based on feedback in this thread ;)
