Well had a wee play last night with TVNZ on demand and for those of you who like good picture quality don't bother using it!! the image is very poor even set to "high quality" it is extremely compressed and on a big screen looks like crap!! Those of you who want "TV" on your PS3 import PlayTV will be worth every cent.

hey guys, a bit of an update.

I did a rescan this morning and I did find TVNZ but the quality was at like 30+% which is pretty much unwatchable - so I'm thinking it must be my trusty DIY aerial or the cable feeding it.

Agreed, PlayTV is the way to go - and if you're not with Orcon then I see no point in downloading something that you can record anyways, that and the fact that it's NOT live TV !

Why does TV need to be live?

IMHO the Play TV box fits more into the category of a PVR, not a live tuner. As soon as you press the pause button in Play TV is the program live anymore? That says to me that *everything* you are watching is actually a recording.

Besides the picture quality issues and un-skippable ads, I believe that TVNZ On Demand has a unique function for PVR users: Watching the stuff you forgot to record, or watching the stuff you couldn't record because of your dodgy DIY aerial wiring ;-)

I have used TVNZ On Demand in the past to maintain WAF when I didn't record some Shortland Street episodes that the wife wanted to watch.

I don't see why it has to be one or the other, can't it be both?

Totally agree. I wont use On Demand over PlayTV, but I will use it on the odd occasion I'm sure.

Had a play round with On Demand last night. I have to say I love the idea of being able just watch stuff that I missed because I wasn't home in time (6 o'clock news) or don't want to get up for (6am business news)! To have it integrated into the PS3 and played on the big screen rather than pecking away at my PC is brilliant.

So great idea although the execution needs some work. For the news and most programs I don't care about quality so the standard On Demand was fine, just being able to see the program you've missed is 95% of the goodness. Unfortunately the audio was mostly out of sync with the video and the whole thing had a habit of freezing at the start of the second or third chapter of a program. The final program I tried played the first chapter then froze at the start of the second and eventually displayed a message essentially saying not enough memory so I'm literally going to display a blank screen to you instead.

Cheers Sony/TVNZ for providing a cool free new service. A little more elbow grease to polish the execution and it will be great.

I think there's definitely a place for On Demand given PlayTV is only a single tuner record device. This at least gives you the option of opting to record a non TVNZ program with PlayTV and still being able to watch the TVNZ one at a later date.

From the quick look I had I couldn't find Lost I think it was, so not all shows are on the On Demand service. (not sure on this..)

The quality is not going to be as good as the broadcast service, just shows how good the bandwidth is for the freeview HD/UHF service. That said, people would complain the other way if the quality was excellant but it took forever to buffer over slow broadband.

Hi just wondering if there was still stuttering issues with large HDD's? Im planning on importing PlayTV but wanted to get the hard drive sorted first. I was looking at buying the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB. Is this is the best drive for the price at the moment?

There does seem to be issues with some 500gb HDD I use a WB 320gb and have no problems at all with PlayTV, works a treat. If it was me I would stick to a 320gb

I've currently got the WD5000BEVT in mine and I'm contemplating dropping back in capacity, but since it's not TOO bad generally, I might just wait for the next update and see if they've done anything to improve it. If not, I guess I'll chuck the 60GB back in and if that works OK think about picking up a 250/320GB or something. 500GB is probably a bit overkill anyway, but seemed good pricewise (although there's not much in it). Would faster speed or bigger cache make any difference?

No one really knows, I'm afraid. NZtechfreak doesn't seem to have a problem, I'm not sure what kind of hard drive he has. If it's WD or Seagate then not sure how to explain that...
