One thing I would like to be able to do that I could do with my WDTV is to be able to copy files across the network to the USB disk plugged in to the back of the unit.

At the moment I have to drag the T2200 and all the cables out of the entertainment cabinet, unplug the disk, plug it in to my PC, copy the file on to the disk then plug the USB drive back in to the T2200 and tidy up.

I can't see anything in the user manual that would allow me to do that so assume it currently can not?

why do you need to do this? why no just play the files directly from the PC via UPnP over wifi or ethernet?

So that people aren't forced to also have a PC available when they want to watch a downloaded film, TV series, music videos or just listen to mp3's.

You can also cast to the unit from a smart phone or tablet using Media share App. You can also access computers direct from the T2200 via File Sharing so you can leave files left in a PC, or media server.

This is not in the manual as I have not been given the green light from the team as they were working on a few items

I do exactly what you want. Have the WDTV as a network device and copy the files to the USB harddisk over the network. Go to your network and see if you can see it.. On my PC it shows up like any other PC on the network..

If you mean plug the disk in to the WDV then access that on the T2200 then that is something I hadn't considered. The problem with that is that I don't have any spare network ports on my router. I unplugged the WDV so that I could plug the T2200 in :)

When you delete something the information window pops up saying recording deleted, but it requires you to push the back button to get rid of the window, pushing exit does nothing it stays there while you can do things in the background, would be great if it disapears when you press any button

Popup on mine just disappears by itself after about 5 seconds, regardless whether I delete a single or multiple recordings. Maybe try a power cycle of the box, see if that helps?

Just noticed some unusual behaviour that I don't know if its known or if it is just me. Say I am on Channel 002 and I press Guide. I need navigate to, say, Duke and select to watch the current program.

The tuner changes to watch the new channel but the Info button still brings up Info on Channel 002 not the newly selected channel.

Has anyone else had this?

Works fine for me, I reproduced your steps - thanks for forcing me to watch a few moments of Home and Away on 2 and missing the AFL game on Duke :) Everything seemed to work as expected, Info showed the correct details for the channel being viewed.

have power cycled many a time, and it still does it. Stays up there a lot longer than 5 seconds. in-fact ive had to press the back button every single time its been there.

Hi Josh, DishTV et al.

This is going to be a very frustrated post, which is not how I would like to introduce myself, but ..

Our T2200 is approx 6 months old and we are likely to return it and demand a full refund under the CGA. I'd like to set out the reasons and see if anyone has any useful comment:

#1 Today the unit displays "Media Initializing" instead of the Library. Turning it off and on again doesn't help. I can't access across the network via SMB. I suspect from reading forums (here and elsewhere) that the hard drive has failed. This could happen to any given piece of hardware, but for us it is the final straw.

However this is the last straw. Seriously, Dear Dish TV: you need to fire your developers and find software that is properly written. From reading the forums here and elsewhere, I can see the same pattern, and my own experience of trying to use the box is the same. It looks good, and I want to like it because the user interface does not try and treat us like idiots (technical information available etc). However .. while not meaning to blow my own trumpet, I'm a software developer with 25+ years experience and I know what bad software is like.

We've been through three software upgrades since installing the unit.

- you ask for fixes, and get the letter of the request, but not the spirit. Often the fix solves the problem in one place in the system, but not a second place when you never imagined they would be different. Or the fix breaks something else.

- new features don't work first time. What new features? You haven't got time to add them because you're too busy chasing bugs. Bet you have rigorous testing every time a new software version comes back, because you don't trust them to get it right.

Some examples:

- sorting the series/episode view LOOKS like it works, but as soon as a new show is recorded, it always goes to the top of the list no matter what the sort order is. This implies the list is PHYSICALLY BEING SORTED, instead of choosing an index, (which is updated as new shows are added).

- deleting old shows is really, really slow - and the more shows done at once, the slower it is.Why? Deleting a file is just removing it from an index. (Oh, what index?)

- When you watch a show, and finish, it goes back to the episode list. If you're lucky, this was the show you just watched, but if ANY status update occurs on the list (a new show starts recording, or finishes recording) then usually the position in the list changes. And not even to the show that just arrived or had the status change (which would almost make sense). Not even the top of the screen. It seems pretty random (although probably isn't). Since the first thing we usually want to do after watching a show is deleting it, this is very dangerous indeed. (and this is not rocket science, I can't remember the number of times I've written code that does this kind of thing : 1 save current position in list, 2 refresh contents of list, 3 look for the item saved in step 1 and change back to it. ).

- This is without even starting on things noted elsewhere on this thread in Geekzone, like jerky display and getting stuck trying to skip backwards through a show. (Bet there is a technical excuse for this, but other devices all seem to manage it).

I suspect I could replace the hard drive with one of my own - there is a spare 1TB drive sitting on the table next to me. But with software like that, why bother? We shouldn't have to deal with this.

I know Dish TV don't have the resources of say, Panasonic, and our Panasonic DVR (which the T2200 was supposed to replace) had annoying limitations, often arbitrary (radio programmes were treated particularly badly, you couldn't record more than two shows at once even if they were on the same channel, let alone frequency etc). But EVERYTHING it was supposed to do WORKED. From the day we bought it. We never found a single bug in 5 years. Now that is clearly decent quality control.

I didn't mean this to be a huge rant, but .. well, tonight I'm fed up and why not let it out. I think Josh might still be away so sorry for releasing this right now, but .. blame the faulty HD. Any comments from anyone?

i agree :)

i think more time should have been spent on it prior to release, and i just cant fathom how it takes so long to fix things especially if there is a "team" of developers.

some things i think they have gone about in an odd way which has lead to issues and this is compounded by hardware that is just up to the task on a good day.

all the features are there, and given better hardware and properly executed software it could/should be an amazing box but sadly its not. and given the hardware is lacking i dont think ever will be issue free.

pitty seeing as its a expensive unit

Otherwise known as 'really poorly written'. I've dealt with desktop computer programs that behave like this. They can look good on the surface, and seem to work most of the time, but then they fail in ways that make you just go "WTF?" You report the problem to the developers, they say they've fixed it, and you look at the new version, and ...you go "WTF?" again. And making any kind of positive improvement takes ages - even really simply stuff like, (randomly chooses one) making a list sort differently. I can think of at l

Back more on track, I've managed to get the hard drive/library back on the T2200. So all the recordings up to when it failed are there. So I plugged in an external hard drive to copy the files and... I have to format the disk as FAT32 ??? Really? Linux has had stable NTFS support for *years*. The drive came from the shop like this.

I thought the T2200 had file serving support but can't find it now. Not meaning to be cynical, I suspect that is something we were promised but has never materialised.

DLNA is not option (And no I'm not reformatting this 2TB drive ... searches for an decent-capacity USB stick drive. This might take multiple trips <sigh>)
