I reinstalled firmware 3.18 on 15/8 as it seems to be pretty stable other than the restart issue. I'm now leaving my box on 24/7 and have had no restarts or blank screens since. It doesn't solve the restart issue but at least the box is stable till the problem is sorted.

Agreed, but leaving the box on 24/7 is a workaround, not a solution, and of course leaves the hard drive recording the current channel 24/7 which will shorten its life.

The problem needs to be resolved, and going by Wklies last comment, he's out of ideas.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but this is the second "FreeView certified" device that has developed an issue due to FreeView changes. I replaced the first with the MagicTV box.

Yep, but I use timeshifting occasionally.

Hi everyone,

This is a link to what I believe is a log from the firmware of a crash at turn on.

Normally the stdout debug information from the software is piped to /dev/null by autorun.sh. I terminated the script and application and then ran manually from the console - and the MTV works as normal. I've been doing this for a while now, but the crashing seems to be happening less.

Anyway, tonight it just crashed (it has crashed twice now since I have been monitoring, both times in the same way). The MTV didn't reboot because it wasn't being run from the script, but the application seg faulted and returned to the bash prompt. I think at this point the autorun.sh script would reboot the MTV.

Hopefully wklie can make something of it???

I suspect this is a problem that may have been solved in 3.18a/b, although they reveal another problem.

FWIW I'm running 3.18 (no a or b on the info screen). I'm using component cables now instead of HDMI and still getting occasional "Magic box will restart" messages.

I have tried again using 3.18b. I also reformatted the system hard drive before updating using the recovery mode. I installed 3.18b and also restored to factory defaults and then put back in my scheduled recordings. Then I logged in via the serial console and ran the system exe and captured the output. It appears to have failed in the same way:

One thing I have noted, there are two potentially different problems.

1) This was the original problem and I have not seen it recently. Upon turning on you would get a picture and sound then shortly after a window would come up saying the MTV will reboot (cannot remember the exact wording). The MTV would then do a full reboot with the logo you would see from a cold power on, this reboot takes some time.

2) This is what I have seen recently and what I believe is captured in the logs I have provided. Upon turning on the exe crashes and you get a black screen - the script then restarts the exe so it's much quicker. In my case I don't get picture and sound back until I unplug and plug back in the HDMI cable.

I haven't seen #1 recently. Maybe others can comment.

I get this every time mine restarts. It certainly doesn't help the WAF as she's not a fan of unpugging cables behind the TV.

I haven't seen problem 1 since I disabled the standby capability. I could make it come back on most restarts by re-enabling standby.

I see problem 2 every few days. I usually notice it in the early evening. I've changed from HDMI to component and re-starting is less painful. Occasionally I get recorded programs preserved in 2 pieces but more often I only get the 2nd half of anything that was recording when it crashed.

I see similar symptoms as jefWright. ie reboot after restart from standby (if using auto standby) or reboots at a similar time daily if device left on all the time.

I wonder if the device has some cron job (anacron) running that could give rise to both behaviors. For those who dont know, anacron is a job scheduling utility for unix (linux) like OSes. That job might not be to reboot, but could be a job which is causing machine to crap out completely for some other reason. The mystery is why it keeps doing it..

If the unit is actually turned of at a time when some job is scheduled, upon turning on the machine, anacron can try to catch up work that wasnt done when it should have been. That would explain the reboot after restart from standby.

If the machine is left on all the time, is there a job automatically being scheduled for 24 hrs time, thus when you leave it on, you get a (not so) random reboot at about the same time each day, which is at about the time when you last intentionally did turn it on.

Hopefully someone with access to the OS may be able to confirm or eliminate these scenarios (ie anacron or similar doing something dumb, repeatedly).

Any updates or word on a possible fix?

I've had a number of occasions where there is no sound, and changing channels up and down did not fix it.

I have to turn the unit off at the power switch and back on again.

This is really starting to get annoying.
