There seem to be a few 90cm dishes floating around on TradeMe for very reasonable prices. Looking to upgrade my existing 60cm dish and possibly get Intelsat 5.

Are these dishes reasonable? Some come with a satellite finder and coupled with www.dishpointer.com I reckon it could probably install it myself.

Anything I should consider or be aware of? What would be the best LNB to consider?

Cheers

I tried several satellite dishes when I was installing freeview (when freeview first came out) and they are all pretty much the same. Probably all came out of the same factory.

As for LNB's, I brought from the local electrical supplier (Idea Electrical) and never had a problem with one.

Don't expect to get a perfect signal (if any) with a 90cm dish at Intelsat 5, still a bit small.(At least here in Nelson it is, if you are further north from here you may be in a better position). My 1.8m dish works well on Intelsat 5 but when I tryed it on my 90cm dish, not so much luck. Main thing to watch for is fitting a C band LNB to what what is normally a KU band 90cm dish, you will need to modify the LNB holder as C band LNB's are a bit bigger than KU. also getting the correct skew on the LNB in very important.

JX satellites in Auckland were the first to discover than a 90cm could easily receive IS5 and have freely published all the details on their website.

You do need a decent quality LNB for it to work fulltime on a 90cm, not some Trade Me special with poor gain. So my advice would be to contact JX, explain your setup, and get them to sell you a suitable LNB, and maybe their "sidecar" attachment that will allow you to keep your D1 LNB on the same dish. That is the setup I have in Auckland and I never loose IS5, even in heavy rain with 36% quality.

Thats about what I was hoping to do, use their sidecar attachment to try and get IS5 aswell. Might drop them an email regarding the best LNB.

Yes, do contact JX, I'm sure there are other C-band LNB's that will get IS5 for you, but I can confirm their one works well. It cost me $60 and comes from the USA, you can see it on their page here:
