Freeview viewers may need to retune their TV or set-top box when the broadcast frequencies change in the Wellington region on Tuesday 19 June.

The changes only affect Freeview terrestrial viewers who receive signals from the Kaukau, Fitzherbert, Baxters Knob and Haywards transmitters. They will not affect Sky subscribers, analogue TV viewers or Freeview satellite TV viewers.

The Ministry of Economic Development’s Radio Spectrum Policy and Planning Manager Len Starling said: “Affected viewers will see a message pop up on their TV screens this week, prompting them to retune when the frequencies change. Retuning can be done simply using the remote control.”

“Those who watch Freeview TV and share an aerial with others, such as in an apartment building or retirement village, should contact their property manager for advice on whether their installation requires any modification.”

Managers of apartments, hotels or motels are advised to talk to an installer prior to the frequencies being changed to see if any technical adjustments are needed. The channel frequencies are changing to ensure that New Zealand’s radio spectrum is freed up for other uses and emerging technologies.

 HOW TO RETUNE
1.    Switch on your Freeview TV or set-top box and press 'menu' on the remote control. Select the 'setup' or 'installation' option.
2.    Select ‘full retuning’, 'digital auto tuning' or similar (some equipment may require you to select ‘first time installation’, 'factory reset' or 'default settings').
3.    Your existing frequencies will be deleted and automatically replaced. This may take a few minutes and your equipment may shut down and restart.
4.    Check that you can receive all of your normal Freeview channels.

Helpful advice on retuning is also available on the Ministry website, www.retune.co.nz. Alternatively, people can call the Radio Spectrum Management free helpline on 0508 336 633 if they have any problems retuning their TV or set-top box.

Does that mean, for Wellington, we have to change the entries in our C:\ProgramData\Geekzone\EPG Collector\EPG Collector.ini file from:
------------------------------------------
[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Wellington - Mt Kaukau.xml
ScanningFrequency=690000,8,MHEG5

[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Wellington - Mt Kaukau.xml
ScanningFrequency=706000,8,MHEG5

[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Wellington - Mt Kaukau.xml
ScanningFrequency=778000,8,MHEG5
--------------------------------------------
..to..
--------------------------------------------
[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Wellington - Mt Kaukau.xml
ScanningFrequency=562000,8,MHEG5

[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Wellington - Mt Kaukau.xml
ScanningFrequency=578000,8,MHEG5

[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Wellington - Mt Kaukau.xml
ScanningFrequency=594000,8,MHEG5
--------------------------------------------
...or do we leave the old ones alone and add the new ones to it?

By the way RSM, the reminder message is showing up on TiVo in the Wairarapa - where there will not be any frequency change.

I have a Samsung TV with built in freeview (no analogue aerial on the house).

It picked up Freeview perfectly before this frequency change with the use of an aerial from Dick Smith.

Now with the change I have retuned the TV and can't pick up anything clearly. I am hugely annoyed.

Is there anything else I can do that doesn't involve the $250 I've been quoted to put an aerial on the house?

Where are you located?

Internal rabbits ears antennas are really only any good if you have very good line of sight coverage to the transmitter.

I am in Petone. I thought that too regarding the rabbit ears - and so was surprised when they worked perfectly and got me all the channels as clear as anything on the DTV channels.  Now it picks up the channels but the picture just keeps freezing.

You were lucky... Not designed for that really. You will have to look at a good aerial. I recommend you contact Cyril7 here on Geekzone and he will sort you out.

Hi Megan, you have PM's turned off so I cannot send you a private message. But anyway, I no longer do antenna installs as I work fulltime back in an engineering office, but I recommend you contact Geekzone member Brunzy, aka Alistar, his web site is below.
