I'm floating my own boat here a bit, but I pose the question should there be a Freeview-Internet sooner rather than later?

The UK House of Lords is suggesting stopping broadcasting TV terrestrially to save bandwidth for mobile phones.

So if the same was done in New Zealand how do you reckon it should be done? Obviously rather open and general purpose, rather than having to use a specific STB or something daft like that. But any thoughts of the specs and streaming formats to use? Maybe we can give Freeview some free advice.

I can't even stream a YouTube video and tonight prime has stopped working due to some sort of frequency change that I can't pick up with a rescan. No more olympics for me. Rant over. Pointless I know.

That is a fantastic idea and would give us three great outlets for Freeview; Freeview HD on UHF, Freeview SD on Satellite and Freeview LD via the internet. Awesome. 15 Fps. Yay.

15fps in low def. You are kidding. Are you on dial-up?

With 3 to 4 Mbps on my broadband I can stream SD signals no problem and the HD streams are sometimes OK. and sometimes they're marginal.

Higher broadband speeds are coming. Google are rolling out a 1 gigabit per second to the home network in Kansas City. It isn't going to have any problems doing dozens of HD streams at once.

IPTV is a rather inefficient way of broadcasting content - hence the reason that fibre deployments in many other countries (such as the US) all use RF over Fibre. A 8MHz RF block can handle 30Mbps.

A 1080i HD stream is roughly ~10Mbps. While you say 1Gbps fibre can handle "dozens" of channels the reality in the real world isn't quite so straight forward. Sure 1Gbps could easily handle ~100 simultaneous HD channels, but engineering a network to support that is no simple feat even if you start deploying multicasting.

But I'm not in Kansas... and no internet connection has ever delivered every frame live. There's always a moment of freeze as google or windows interrogate your life...
