is it just me, or am I the only one who misses these extra 4 channels??

SBS/1
NINE NETWORK
GO!
GEM

they had such good programmes..... i am subscribed to MySky HDi and also had my DVB-S2 box and found i watched the Aussie channels just as much, if not MORE, than the ones i actually PAY for!!! lol.

Just out of interest, as i was in the UK at the time, was the Eurovision Song Contest shown on ANY New Zealand channel??? I know Stratos gave it a go last year and SBS in Australia play it every year... but yeah.

SBS/1 and SBS/2 were great.... i wish either Sky or Freeview would pick the channel up and play it here :(

Downloading from the SBS OnDemand website is working fine for me. PM if you want further details.

Exactly as you say, I found I was watching SBS more than the local channels, so I'm pleased to have found a way to get continued access.

i have never even thought about that. I would've assumed that, because it's "overseas", we would be unable to view their schedule. Like with the BBC and ITV1 websites in the UK, we can't view them here.

I'll check them out and see what there is to watch.
Do you know if the other Aussie channels have onDemand too????

Anyone can view the schedule for SBS OnDemand, unlike BBC iPlayer.

I haven't actually looked, but I assume they do. Let me know what you find.

SBS seem to have more high-quality docos than any other channel in this part of the world. Right now I am downloading "A History of Scotland" which is a series I've been following. I have noticed that the programmes don't stay available for very long, so if you see them, it pays to grab them.

The US's Public Broadcasting pbs.org is great for docos too. I've heard some rumours of programmes being geo-blocked, but all that I have tried just worked. It's great if you like the Ken Burns style documentaries (I do, especially when compared to a Discovery Channel house style doco, which are almost unwatchable to me) and the science on Nova is world class. Lots of them are full length. Time Team America is only in clips though.

The channels mentioned (9 , Gem and Go) are broadcast via the Aurora service which is:

- 4:3 only
- Not HD
- Due to be shutdown sometime next year

So I would question whether it's worth going to all the expense of a 2.4m dish for a year or so's viewing of a few 4:3 channels.

Ooops, yes you're right. I missed the bit about D1. They are on the NB beam though, which is why the humungous dish is needed.

EDIT: According to Lyngsat: http://www.lyngsat.com/Optus-D1.html

Only SBS and ABC are still present on D1's NB beam, but not Gem, 9 or Go. So I'm not sure what Apsattv was referring to there.
