quick question. With Freeview HD would the direction of the aerial impact the number of channels you get. Trying to get my mum's digital TV sorted. they only get 5 channels (Media works channels i.e. 3 3+1, C4 etc). Trying to work out if I should look into the cabling / signal boosters or if it could be related to aerial direction. They are based in Wanganui. For channels like TV2 the Sony TV reports a strong signal strenght (80 out of 100) but zero quality.

I wasn’t sure if the direction matters. I had a thought you should either get all or none.

Where's the nearest transmitter for Wanganui? She'll get a better signal if the aerial is pointed at said transmitter.

Aerials are direction so alwhere it's pointing is the most important factor. You should be pointing towards Mt Jowett.

Polarization matters too.

Wharite (in the manawatu) is vertically polarized so elements needs to be vertical, obviously. Looking at the Mt Jowett stats that has horizontal polarization so the elements should sit horizontally.

The next biggest is good connectors and good cable. Ideally you will have RG6 cable with compression crimps. Screw on, or tool-less, crimps are generally crap and shouldn't be used.
