Here's a problem and solution that may be obvious to some, but I didn't find a full solution here, so I'll explain it all to help some newbie to Freeview / DVD recorder users like myself:

Last week we purchased a Panasonic DVD Recorder Model DMR-XW390GZK and connected it up to our LG TV Model 50PK550-AA via an HDMI Cable. A MySky HDMi unit was connected to the AVI input on the Panasonic DVD Recorder.

The system seemed to be working correctly with Freeview tuned correctly and able to select freeview channels when the input select is set to TV, and able to watch/record from the My SKY HDMi unit when input select was switched to AVI. DVD’s play fine and all functions checked so far seem to be working.

However, there was a problem in that when the TV is turned off either from remote or manually from its own on/off switch, then the DVD Recorder also turned itself off. This happened every time we turned the TV off, meaning we could not set the DVD Recorder recording freeview via TV input select or a playlist from the Sky unit via AVI input select.

We discovered that if we pull out the HDMI cable from the TV that the problem stopped and the AVI output could be used instead to monitor the output of the DVD Recorder, but this is very inconvenient, as it requires frequently connecting and disconnecting the HDMI connection when wanting to watch HDMI quality DVD’s, Freeview etc and when alternately recording TV or a Sky playlist etc.

The problem was caused due to the default setting of HDMI protocols from the LG TV sending 'sympathetic' turn off signals to the DVD Recorder.  To stop this happening:
1. On the LG TV select Menu from the TV remote.
2. Select Option | OK
3. Scroll down using the remote navigation keys to 'Simplink' and toggle the setting to Off
4. Exit out using the remote Exit button.
5. Test the result.  Turning the TV off should not affect the operation of the DVD Recorder.

Hope this helps someone!

Kind regards,
                   Jeff Angus

Yep, it's the HDMI CEC feature.

It should be smart enough to not turn off your recorder if it's currently recording.

It is CEC as alluded to above. It allows components to control each other's functions. In Panasonic it is called Vieralink, not sure what it is called for LG. You can turn it off on the Panasonic by going into
settings - connection- HDMI connection and set the viera link option to 'off'. That's how to do it on my Panasonic DMP-BWT835 and I assume it is the same for the 390.
Owners manual should be able to guide you to it if you get lost.

edit: This thread probably belongs in the home theatre forum.

The 390 is smart enough to not fully shutdown (display shows BYE, then turns off, but the red REC is still shown and recording continues) when there is a PROGRAMMED recording in progress but not when you just press the red button to start an instant recording
