Currently I have a desktop computer with a DVB-S card in it, so coupled with ProgDVB software there is no problem either watching TV on the computer monitor, or recording TV programs to my NAS.

However, I am about to change to an all-in-one set up, so I'll need an external satellite receiver ... again no problem as there are heaps in the market place, my new set up has HDMI input, and I assume that my NAS will suffice as well as any USB storage connection.

But, I've heard that many of these PVR units save TV programs in strange or proprietary formats that require replay to a TV/monitor to be back through the unit itself.

Since my main TV accesses programs/films etc off the NAS (through ethernet and separate media player), I'm concerned that anything recorded using the PVR may be unwatchable/unplayable.

Anyone had experience using a PVR in this fashion?

Don't know about the software you're using, but the popular software (mediaportal, etc) all stores recordings as .ts, which is raw data from the broadcast transport stream.

I think for the most part, the problem PVR's are the commercial set top style ones.

Id definitely recommend mediaportal. I've used it for years.

Hi Andrew ... it is a set-top box receiver/PVR that I'm thinking of mainly because once the recording requirements have been set, the computer doesn't have to be turned on.

However, one can also get DVB-S USB units that are essentially just an external TV card, and that is probably fine with ProgDVB or MediaPortal etc etc.

I just thought it would be nice to have a stand-alone TV receiver/recorder unit smile

Just put your old computer out the back and set up mythtv on it. Then you can leave it on and it won't annoy anyone.
