Hi All,

Does TV3 Mediaworks have an equivalent smart tv app like TVNZ on Demand? If they do, I can not for the life of me find it. I have Samsung smart tv circa 2016. Sadly no Freeview on Demand on my model :(

Alternatively what is a good cost effective android tv box, have just moved the Smart TV to a place with no aerial plug and want to stream everything anyway.

Thank you in advance.

Odd how my circa 2016 (ku series) has hbbtv app, tvnz app and another freeview app. Two of these have mediaworks integration.

We have had our Samsung smart TV about 3 years now. Up till about 18 months ago it had the TV3 on demand app on it which we used often, but the app back then did have a lot of issues. Then it disappeared - removed? or something happened to it. could never find it to reinstall to this day.

Yea, this experience has kinda put me off Samsung, to put it politely. How hard is it to update the firmware across the board.... rant over!

I thought Freeview requirement was for an antenna to be connected (with actual DVB-T signal) in order for hbbtv app to appear.

It's not just Samsung.  App support for so-called 'smart' TV's is in fairly short time next to nil no matter what the brand.  Only possible exception is an Android TV.  I guess it's simply to hard to maintain app support for every possible model and software iteration in the market, and TV tech is changing so rapidly that the second you walk out the shop door with the latest and greatest,  it is already superseded.  IME anything older that 2-3 years you can expect to get a reduction in the 'smarts'.

This situation is odd however as our 2014/15 model Samsung still has the "ThreeNow" app...at least it did lat time I looked a couple of days ago.

Yea thats why I dont worry so much about what smart functions my tv has, and use a Nvidia Shield android tv box to do everything. Frequent updates, does way more than a smart tv, more power and you can always change the box easily if needed rather than needing to upgrade the tv

Looks like Three has discontinued the app:

My 2015 Samsung TV has an app called "Freeview On Demand", which when chosen, shows a consolidated view of all On Demand TV Shows, or if you choose the "Apps" menu item, then allows you to choose individually the TVNZ, ThreeNow and Maori TV on demand apps. You do not need an aerial connected for this to work. Check to see if you have that.

Note that this is entirely separate from the Freeview Plus On Demand functions accessible via the coloured buttons on your remote - for which you do need an aerial connected.

I spoke too soon. Three Now app has gone, and no sign of the new Freeview On Demand app, at least not yet. Also can’t find it as an Apple app. Seems it has a very limited compatibility, at least for now.

+1 for don't rely on your smart TV for "smarts" over the long term.

(Android TV perhaps being an exception as apps will endure beyond the life of the TV OS).

I likewise have a Shield and Mi Box ($90NZD) and only recently installed Matt Huismans Kodi Addons and they really are very good. ie. All NZ and Aus channels via IPTV - incl an EPG.

AND NZ OnDemand Addons.

AND LightBox, Fanpass and hopefully soon a SkyGo Addon.

Highly recommended.

Oh yeah and as both of these streamers are AndroidTV based you can do a truck load more.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the functionality of Freeview On Demand as a decent interface to all of the FTA on-demand programmes, as covered in a post above; given that it has been able to be rolled out to non-current TV models is great, though clearly it’s taking longer for some brands than others.

Our 2017 Panasonic supported it out of the box (though no instructions on how to use it!), and it’s certainly useful to not to have to run various apps for different networks, and given it doesn’t rely on each of those networks to provide their own apps I hope it’ll be better supported.

Yea Matts addons are good, I frequently use the radio one. Has he got a lightbox addon now? I recently just instaleld the android tv version of lightbox on my sheild and it works great. Have you heard that he is working on a skygo addon or is that just a wish? I remember messaging him last year if he could make one but he didnt have an account to use it.

And I see the threenow app  i used to be able to sideload to my Shield and it worked but the lastest just crashes, so I might try and find an old version in apkpure to try. Shield has updated to android 8 now so that may be the issue.

Call Samsung. My Samsung TV is 8 years old and I called them recently and was amazed at the service I received at no cost.
