Recording the opening ceremony and watching it delayed on my PCH.  Audio shows up as DTS (apparently the PCH thinks DD in a .ts MPEG4 is DTS) but I get no audio at all. I am guessing the carrier is there but there is no 5.1 track from China?

What are others getting?

how has tv1 been reporting up until this point?  Honestly i haven't tried much from tvnz cos of the sound format.

Could the dts be correct?  and you need some sort of decoder (read = receiver) instead of just passing through the dts through hdmi (which the pch can't internally decode).

I can't watch it live (no good video card) but on playback all I see is AAC audio. So if you have all speakers going perhaps your AVR is synthesising the rear channels.

My PCH is connected to my AVR over Toslink and if there is 5.1 audio (DD usually) it will be heard. Works fine on TV3.

I dont use AC3 because it sounds strange on my PC (centre channel is too quiet...).

It did sound 5.1 to me though.

A bit OT but why wasn't TVNZ Sport Extra in HD? The opening ceremony was on both channels, but was only Live on Sport Extra and was only HD on One.

Sports Extra is only a SD channel - TVNZ simply don't have the bandwidth on their MUX to transmit 3 HD channels.

That's weird then since the recording I took only has the AAC track in it which PDVD8 plays okay

edit:

Rescanned and found TVOne (AC3) which indeed has AC3 audio and it plays fine. Alas I recorded the wrong channel for the opening ceremony so I have it in glorious HD with no playable audioCry

Olympics have been really great using Nova T-500 and PowerCinema feeding Dolby Digital 5.1 via sp-dif. Only problem is that TVNZ seem  to be feeding comentary at far too low a level to the centre channel (in my case anyway). Going back to the basic 2x channel soundtrack is a real downer. Has anyone else had this problem with their set top boxes?

yeah I'm noticing the centre channel is on the low side.    I just turn the centre channel level up a bit.

Noticing it here too.

As a site note the bitrate for the 720p video seems pretty poor - lots of noise and blocking, at least compared to what SKY and TV3 are producing.

I noticed this with some of the equestrian and gynastics.  Blocking on the gray colored horses and video noise when looking at the crowds though the latter may have been due to low lite..

Didn't realise that the TVNZ Sport Extra was SD. Not that it mattered when watching the Women's cycling through rain and spray!! Trouble with TV1 is the damned ads.

Yes, sound of commentary was too low.

Hey TVNZ and TV3 how about AC3 on the DTH service, TV3 has heaps of room so no reason why they cant, TVNZ might be pushing things at the moment with all the stuff they are running.
