I have just downloaded and installed successfully firmware updates for the Samsung LA40B650 and LA22B450 LCD TVs.  The updates were released in the last few weeks. No release notes so I'll have to go exploring, but the first noticable difference was the better picture quality from the component video input (or someone has been mucking around with the settings and the update set them back to the default settings again Smile ).  I haven't checked other models but assume the updates are available for those as well.

Edit:  On the LA40B650 all the settings were reset including setting the default country to Australia.  Had to set back to NZ & run the Autostore again.

Does the new firmware let you select between AC3 and AAC when you're viewing TV3 or are you stuck with AAC for all shows?

Can't really see any significant changes after the upgrade, still only the 3 internet widgets even though overseas versions have Twitter plus other US only subscription services that can't be accessed normally anyway. The DLNA player now lists the internal TV memory as a device ( all 147MB of it !). Still no AC3 on TV3. And still occasionally the speech goes out of sync with the video on TV3 but it has been much better lately, compare to a few months ago.

I just can't understand what Samsung are doing with their AC3 support. Some firmware releases do support AAC/AC3 switching on TV3, others don't. Despite trying numerous channels I've never been able to get to the bottom of why they do this and why they are the only manufacturer I'm aware of who doesn't give you the capability to use SPDIF 5.1 output from TV3.

I wouldn't even consider upgrading the firmware, unless the provided a list of changes made.

I doubt they will improve file format support on existing tv's.  Anyway, Samsung's DNLA is broken and won't work with any other software other than Samsungs.  I gave up in the end and built a HTPC so I can play whatever I want through the TV.

Just noticed on TV3 that it is coming through in Dolby Digital whereas other channels are still in HE-AAC. I don't think it was like this before. Can't change it from Dolby digital to anything else though.

Cheers

This has been happening for quite some time on TV3 with many Samsung TVs and also a lot of reports with HTPCs. Does it occur on any other channels? I have all but stopped watching TV3 because of this.
