I just see that the latest season of AI is on as is House. Both are in HD in the US but from I can tell both TV2 and TV3 are showing them in 16:9 SD.  Perhaps because they are both from Fox and neither channel is willing to pay for the HD versions or they are not available in HD (presumably 1080i/50)

Please note I do NOT work for TVNZ, but I have been informed through a friend of a senior TVNZ manager that the current focus is to purchase (quality?) programming as cheaply as possible.

Based on some of the problems that TVNZ face, (and for that matter TV3), I think it is safe to assume that HD content may not be a priority at this time.

Cheers DB

That's interesting because assuming TV3 is in a similar position (in fact worse with no state funding) almost all of their prime time TV shows that are available in HD appear to be broadcast in that format (apart from House). Perhaps they have better purchasing power?

TV habits have changed, there is a huge market for on demand HD quality content... however currently in NZ the only way to get that is to download it illegally.

Pity that TVNZ didn't see fit to broadcast the 7s in HD.. With TVNZ it's as if HD doesn't exist.  The new Torchwood  series starting this week is a good case in point..

Was the Sky feed in HD or were they constrained by the TVNZ source?

Seems to me that the HD content on TVNZ at the moment are reruns/catchups.

Examples:
TVNZ - Lost rerun in HD, new season not in HD (according to guide)
TV3 - House - old seasons in HD, new seasons are not in HD.

But TV3 does have a lot more HD content on right now, I just pulled 23 shows on this week in HD. Including:
Greys Anatomy
Simpsons
Modern Family
Bones
Dr Phil (multiple shows on)
CSI
NCIS: LA
The Goodwife
Lie To Me (although the first episode looked average at best)
Shark
Wiggles
Assorted Saturday Night Movies.

EDIT: Well looking at fox network website http://www.fox.com/shows.htm , it seems that they make quite a few shows that TV3 are running in HD. This would confirm that TVNZ are not buying HD content as they are too tight.

Modern Family is from ABC on TV3 it is in HD, Lost finale season is from ABC and on TV2 I don't think it is going to be in HD.

Not only do TVNZ not do HD, they don't do DD 5.1. For some shows that really adds to the experience that two channel AAC with possibly DPLII processing applied to it, can't really make up for.

Hmm noticed from the other thread that was talking about TVNZ and 5.1 that it was April last year when things were almost ready to switch over... but then there was that article around that time from someone high up in TVNZ where they stated that as far as they were concerned TV watchers were not interested in HD and surround sound so it was a low priority for them. grrrr

The only thing I am not interested in on my TV is TVNZ and it's non-HD content. TV3 is getting a lot more of my viewing time right now and TV2 has lost me as a viewer for the new series of LOST if it is not in HD.

And another thing, I am pretty sure we could raise some issues with broadcasting standards about the fine print/conditions on some products advertise in SD.....it is impossible to read them even if the TV is paused...it's pixelated and blurry.

I have also noticed that the Freeview | HD ad's on TV seem to concentrate on digital rather than HD content. hmmm.

Well 24 has ended up on C4 with its crap picture and sound, which is a waste - so media works are not as guilt free as you may think.

That decision by Mediaworks not to show 24 on TV3, and possibly in HD (even if 24 was not being broadcast in True Hi-Definition, at least it would look better than the SD stream of C4), has made me decide not to watch it.

I am surprised how Hi-Definition really does influence my TV viewing, haha.

I asked last year when this occurred. Mediaworks said to me, given its ratings, they could not justify it being shown in Primetime. So rather than show it late at night (possibly in HD) they preferred to show it in Primetime on C4. That's a silly decision IMHO since those of us who are keen on the show would watch it in any time slot and we are technologically savvy enough to use a PVR or whatever to timeshift to a time when it was more convenient.

I guess I will find another way to watch it in improved video and audio.

I am waiting till I have a couple more episodes downloaded before I start to watch it, at 1.something gigs each for them how they are supposed to be heard its a small price to pay.

I would have thought, that for a "music" channel that C4 would have somewhat better sound than they do.

The same as Dexter being moved to C4. It's nowhere near as enjoyable without HD and 5.1.
