According to today's Business Herald the government is unwilling to continue funding for TVNZ 7 which will close in the middle of next year, and will change the rules to avail NZ On Air funding to content on paytv channels (Sky).

That makes me pretty sad. TVNZ7 has been a great source of interesting documentaries and solid programming. Dammit TVNZ, stick a few adverts between shows and make a go of it.

That annoys the piss out of me, also because Kidzone from TVNZ6 was supposed to move on there at 1 March...1 March rolled around all the kids shows left TVNZ6 and were not shown anywhere. These were great for pre-schoolers especially if you refuse to pay for Sky TV or Telstraclear.

What's the point in TVNZ/TV3 "competing" with Sky if they're going to put channels exclusively on the ky platform.

I'm misunderstanding this - Joe Blogs, low wage earner pays (NZ on air funding=tax) for somone to produce some content. The content is then shown on Sky. Joe can't afford a luxury like Sky. Or does the show get sold to Sky and NZ on air makes a return on their investment? I know this stuff is about nothing but money, I'm just trying to understand how it works.

"A well-placed source said the Government will give state TV no obligation other than making a 9 per cent return on assets." thats the moneyshot right there. National is business friendly and business focused, this is why they will always concentrate on profit before people, they operate the country as if it were a large corporation eg. selling off tax payer owned assets.

Once U goes under, and without TVNZ7, I wonder if we can at least get TV ONE on dvb-s in HD. (It still escapes me why Sky is permitted to encrypt TVNZ FTA content.)

I asked sky if this new Kids channel from TVNZ will be shown unencrypted, and got back a "no" - I too wonder how they can encrypt what is essentially free television.

There are some truly bizarre happenings behind the scenes in media at the moment, the government just handed Mediaworks a loan for $43m which Minister Steven Joyce says is not a loan, but there is an 11.2% interest fee, so you lend money to a private company with tax payers money, and charge interest and its not a loan?? And the government consulted who before handing over my money? Sorry, didn't mean to digress the thread, this latest stunt has just got me really annoyed.

It makes no sense for NZ on Air fund content that is only going to be shown on pay tv given 50%+ people don't have and don't want SKY.

Unless SKY TV are going to pay above the cost of production for the rights to use the content I don't see how it make sense.

It's probably just the herald making up a story on a slow news day.

I'm fine with TVNZ having to generate a decent ROI, there is probably a lot of fat in the organisation.

Ideally I would prefer to not be taxed to fund a SOE in a dying sunset industry (broadcast tv) though.  I wouldn't miss the content they provide most likely, there are plenty of online alternatives now.

I appreciate "Grandma and Poppa" still watch TV1 news at 6pm and Sunday Montana theatre and wouldn't know what to do or how to get content if they disappeared, so I accept we live in a non ideal world for a bit longer.

If that is true, that is a blow for freeview, and getting people to switch to it. But I guess most  will eventually have freeview as they upgrade their TVs anyway. I find tvnz7 good. They have already got rid of the TVNZ sports channel.

The government didn't give MWorks any cash, what they did do was allow them to pay off their 2011-2013 licenses they bought in 2009 over a 4 year period at 11% interest.

It was a scheme offered to all the radio broadcasters , who complained that in the middle of the financial crisis in 2009 there were very few people willing to lend them any money to pay for the radio licenses they needed for the next 20 years. So the government let them do a "hire purchase"

Its a beat up by the Herald, who are owned by APN who have a 50% stake in MWorks main competitor

It clearly isn't a loan - and the journalist who wrote the article in the media (NZ Herald from memory) that started all this is an idiot. Mediaworks is paying over several years rather than in a lump sum, paying a hefty premium on top of what they would have paid if they simply paid up-front, and forfeit their licences if they default. The story tries to sensationalise a fairly hum-drum commercial payment arrangement.

While I'm not in favour of broadcasting regulation to protect the FTA players (anti-siphoning etc) I do, however, think that giving NZ on Air funding to pay TV channels is plain wrong. Pay TV should fund itself off its subscribers and taxpayer funding (if any, which is a separate debate) should only go to FTA channels.

Doubt it. I dont think satellite will ever offer HD through Mpeg 2.
I was looking at it and found this which would suggest Sky HDI has an Mpeg 4 avc decoder built into it for HD.

I may have the wrong end of the stick, but would make more sense to me that Sky would upgrade to Mpeg 4 for HD as it wont waste as much bandwidth compared to mpeg 2.

Well, I am really disappointed.

There goes real news.

I love TVNZ7 for one reason, they debate, they have real unbiased news. They take the time to look at both views etc. It is really sad to see the only source of debate on TV in NZ is moving/going away. Now unfortunitly the only way to get both sides of the debate is online.

If i had my way TVNZ 7 would be funded, even at a loss. Unbiased and informative news is very important and we don't get anywhere near enough of it, I don't want NZ turning into America.
