Hi everyone, is anyone experiencing any issues with TV3's 5.1 sound? Originally I thought it was my setup playing up, here is the issue, I have noticed any programme on TV3 that is in 5.1 there is very little or no sound coming from the rear speakers....now the home theatre system is working fine DVD’s and Blu-ray movies play fine with no issues also the PS3 games in 5.1 are fine with good solid sound from the surround channels but when watching TV3 the rear channels are almost non exsistant? I have PlayTV on the PS3 that outputs 5.1 and a Sony Bravia X500 TV that also outputs 5.1 and experience the same problem on both devices (running optical)........Any idea’s?

Are you watching a 5.1 show? You will only get sound from the centre and rear speakers if the show is in 5.1, if it's not you'll just hear sound from the front left and right speakers.

Are you using the AC3 audio channel or just AAC?

Hi Yes I am referring to shows in "true 5.1" and yes centre speaker and front left and right are working fine, It is just the surround left and right that seem to have very low level audio issues. I am also using the AC3 audio on both PlayTV and the Sony Bravia. If I do use AAC my home theatre is set to run Dolby Prologic 2 and it works fine in that mode......

Panasonic SCHT-900 Just remember it is working fine in 5.1 on all other functions (PS3 gaming, Blu-ray, DVD etc)

The 5.1 programs can sometimes be a bit like that - although generally all channels make noise.

Though....

When you have the 5.1 stream selected and they broadcast an older/cheaper program with 2 channel stereo you may find you just get the front left and right speaker making noise and the rest annoyingly quiet. I found a stereo/matrix option on my Denon that makes all the speakers get busy - but its a pain because I really only want that to happen when the sound is 2 channel stereo and when the feed is real 5.1 then dont fiddle with it - I dont seem to have such a setting.

Yeah robjg63 you are right in that there is no setting to do what you say becuase even 2 channel programs are still broadcast in full 5.1 format, only with no sound in the centre and rear channels.

It's not wrong, it's just not what you'd expect. You'd be better to just switch the audio back to AAC for non full 5.1 shows and then your receiver can make up the sound spread from there.

Generally I've never heard much from the rear surrounds. The odd exception is Hawaii 50 which has a little on the surrounds..

Interesting, up until around Feb I had no problems with AC3 on TV3 the 5.1 sound was awesome, but now it does not seem as good, I will have a closer look at Hawaii FiveO this week. One other show that was fantastic was Glee had lots of effects on surround channels like school bells ringing, idle chit-chat and fantastic 5.1 audio on the music score but now hardly has anything on surround.......like I say it does sound like something is wrong at my end but EVERYTHING else is working fine. I have 2 optical cables one from the Sony Bravia X500 and one from the PS3 (all other 5.1 content on the PS3 is 150% even my home videos which are in AC3 and 1080i)

I tend to hear a fair bit from the surround channels. Good shows were NCIS and Hawaii Five O. Apart from Hawaii Five O, the current crop of 5.1 shows on TV3 don't have much going on in the surrounds since they are not that sort of show. Bones doesn't have or need much but just looking at the TV3 schedule, NCIS LA should have lots of surround effects.

No I have 3 options,

1) run optical direct from the PS3 to the home theatre
2) run optical direct from the Sony Bravia to the home theatre
3) Set the Sony Bravia audio to "audio out" so anything plugged into the HDMI inputs pass direct through to the optical out including AC3/AAC etc. The TV3 AC3 issure is present on all 3 options and all audio levels are the same....

On the side does enyone know how to remove my last 2 posts above this one......I do not seem to have a remove/edit option??

Watched CSI last night and can confirm the 5.1 audio still sounds as good as ever sorry.

Lots of rear effects, especially on the starting sequence which is where I think you should go for testing purposes.
