As I have documented in another thread, I am now able to get good HD UHF reception in a fairly marginal area. Since achieving that breakthrough, I have been playing with the PVR function of my bargain non-approved STB. I have an old IDE enclosure with an even older drive I am using for test purposes. It works pretty well for standard definition broadcasts and also for "high definition" with two-channel audio. Last night though I recorded Indianna Jones on TV3 in full 5.1 surround sound and got a terrible result, with constant drop-outs, pixillation and desynchronisation throughout the entire recording. This was not due to a reception problem as I watched parts of the film while recording and everything looked fine. The only conclusion I can draw is that the full high definition video plus 5.1 audio channels is overwhelming the USB port or the hard drive with too much data. Can anyone tell me more about this kind of problem, and whether upgrading the drive alone might fix it? I was thinking maybe a flash drive could handle a higher data rate but my Orton box can only cope with Fat32 and is very fussy about which flash drive it will work with.

Is USB 2.0 throughput fast enough for HD? I can't test myself but as friend in the UK advises it is not, and he bought some top end equipment.

Do any TV3 recordings work? There is no difference in the TV3 broadcasts whether the show is HD or SD as they broadcast fulltime in 1080i with 5.1 sound.

Yeah, that's the thing. I have recorded several test fragments (five minutes or so) from TV3, including some that were supposed to also be in real surround sound, and didn't encounter this before. Only with this film have I had this problem, and it started right from the beginning, with stuttering and missing bits (half-second sections or so) in both the audio and video, but not in the same places. Some pixelation but the worst problem is the audio and video skips over the missing bits. I get this both on PVR playback and on the computer (VLC, VideoRedo, KMPlayer) so I have to conclude that the skips really are missing data.
