So I turned on the tele tonight when I got home from work and noticed that TV1 and TV2 were showing "Dolby digital" sound instead of HE-AAC. So I did a test record on the computer with NPVR and the sure enough, there is an AC3 audio track in the transport stream for TV1 and 2.  Four, U TVNZ7 and Prime all still in HE-AAC only. Does this mean that TVNZ are going to start broadcasting DD 5.1 now?

Also do you think these recordings will not require the audio to be transcoded to AC3 for playback on the PS3 or other devices that do not support HE-AAC?  See my other thread:

I've been trying to keep up with developments in the thread Where's the Dolby 5.1 TVNZ over the past couple of months. There are 9 pages of posts there, but if you start around page 6 you can get the up to date news on AC3 and 5.1 sound from TVNZ.
