Hi there,

I see they have released the 3700TD, looks quite nice, appears to have WiFi.

Anyone got one yet?

if some one out there has one can you measure the maximum operational wattage and the standby wattage when set to maximum power saving ?

Have a look at the 3600 thread - I recall Bob123 (?) had one to review and provided this, look around page 40ish.

WiFi - what for ? network connectivity is only enabled for firmware updates and pathetic RSS feed on the 3600.  Be useful if there were some real services accessible through network, but as this is Freeview limitation I don't see it being enabled in NZ for a different model.  Until then WiFi is really a chrome bonnet ornament.

i have read every page old chap :).  The 3700 has a BRAND NEW low power mode so low it wont even update its guide while on stand by.  It will be a much different set of figures...   i kinda know the up wattage is 20w but i suspect the standby is now just a few watts  but i would like to know for sure.

Power use in standby (ie clock on display) is 11 watts acording to the Elto power meter - I will test the current draw off mains another day with a proper meter (it should be the same but maybe a little more accurate than the Elto) - I will also see if there is a deeper sleep in the menu

This is Bob123 reporting back to Evanh - who then replies at about 5W less a definite improvement.

Bob123 said he was going to report back after a proper test but it hasnt happened yet, and i have been hanging out for that. The low power test should be a truck load under 11w considering even the guide update is powered down, but i could easily be wrong, hence the hope of some full facts that we can base a decision on while the MTV3600 is still getting top dollar on T/me

From the 3700 glossy I noted:

You can now seamlessly expand your storage capacity by connecting one or more USB disks to Magic TV?. Recording, copying, moving, editing and playback from these disks is all fully supported. You control how they are used.
Note: Recordings are encrypted and can only play on the unit which originally made the recordings.

I was quite excited until I read the note, I expect the encryption is universal not just to USB connected drives, if it is this would be bad news for future mods, as we know the 3600 does not encrypt. Can anyone confirm whether the 3700 encrypts on internal storage as well as USB connected?

It's strange but the PixelMagic website (the manufacturers of MagicTV) doesn't have the MTV3700D model listed in their product list, which is frustrating because I was hoping to use the 'specification comparison' feature on their website between models, i.e. 3600 vs 3700. I'm going to email them about that!

I am really keen to hear the thoughts (good and bad) from anyone who has the MTV3700D model. I am in the market for a HD digital PVR and have been told that MagicTV is one of the best PVRs out there. Up until now I've had a Sony HDD recorder which just records SD recordings off analogue TV, so I am excited at the idea of recording HD content from 2 tuners at the same time.

But one person suggested that I wait until it's been reviewed and hear back from people's comments etc, but at the same time I was hoping to get one in time to record the later stages of the RWC 2011, so how long should one wait?

I guess it's a fair assumption that the 3700D model have improvements over the 3600D model. All I know so far is that it comes with an internal 1TB HDD and has a faster CPU.

Yep but I'm trying to find a specification comparison page so I can see comparison of features/improvements over the 3600.

Some answers I've got.

New features of MTV3700TD:

- Faster CPU
- 1TB HDD
- Record/export to 3.5" USB HDD
- MHEG HD (this makes the characters on the EPG smooth, and enables the possibility of future HD applications from Freeview)
- MHEG Interaction Channel and Streaming (experimental alpha status for future features from Freeview)
- Lower power standby (warning: this disables recording schedule updates during standby, may affect series recording)
- Fast Forward audio
- Slow motion and audio
- iPhone/iPad/Android remote app (it's unclear whether this feature will be ported back to MTV3600TD)
- Format System HDD

Note:
1. Recordings of HD channels will always be encrypted and bound to (can only be played via) the recording unit, regardless of whether it's recorded to internal HDD or USB HDD. Recordings of SD channels are not encrypted. (On MTV3600TD-NZ, no encryption is done for any channel.)
2. 2.5" HDD is not supported if it does not have its own power supply. Recording to USB flash drive is also not supported.
3. Recommended HDD size is 1-1.5TB. Maximum HDD size supported is 2TB. 3TB will not work.
4. It should be possible to use USB HDD already formatted in NTFS without reformatting, but this is not guaranteed.

So a Western Digital 1TB HDD (without it's own power supply) won't work? Is that because it doesn't supply enough power through the USB?

And no recordings to a USB memory stick either? But presumably one can update the firmware from USB memory stick?
