I noticed something odd about TV3's HD broadcasts. On my PS3 at least when the video switched from the game (Sky's cameras) to Josh Kronfeld and the TV3 guys talking about the game at half time, the PQ seemed to switch from HD to upscale SD. Is it because TV3 has no HD cameras in their booth or was I imagining it?

I did switch over to TV1 for their half time and it looked HD but I could only bear to watch Devlin for about 30s before I had to switch away.

As an aside not related to SQ but perhaps AQ I thought while Merhtens probably made some very insightful and thoughtful comments, he sounded like he was talking through a sock!  That could because of the way he talks but I have heard him on TV before and that didn't seem likely or he was either miked or mixed poorly.

Others have thoughts on this?

lol... I'm with you on that one!!

But, yeah, I think the TV3 cameras are only SD, so when they are not taking from the official HD feed, they look to be in upscale SD.

I also noticed the centre channel audio commentary was not well mixed at all. The first few minutes of audio commentary from the centre channel was scratchy and was clipping quite a bit.
Can't say I noticed Merhtens all that much, but that may have been because it wasn't all that well mixed.

TV3s HD coverage certainly isn't up to the quality of TVNZs. Just a pity about the commentators. Some who I hadn't seen for decades on TV.

I'm interested you say that because IMHO TV1's picture quality was absolutely terrible, it had obviously been artificially sharpened with a filter which was clearly obvious and ruined the viewing experience. TV3's image was vastly superior.

The only thing good about TV1 was their audio, TV3 had problems on Saturday night with their 5.1 being way too loud in the ear channels, and last night had issues with their centre channel commentary feed.

5.1 for the RWC has been stunning. Crank it up and disable the centre channel commentary and it's just like being there!

I thought the other way round and TV3's 5.1 was way better than TV1 which sounded more like 5.0..

Last night I thought:

TV1 Picture: Average and a bit dull/less saturated, and also the black levels a bit high - a bit more like grey.  Almost cold actually and this time maybe a bit too much sharpening.  (A little bit can look ok I think).
TV1 Sound: Very well weighted and clear commentary, but a bit quiet on the surround side of things.

TV3 Picture: Vibrant/colourful
TV3 Sound: Very heavy rears, but you know what, I liked it that way.  Centre commentary was shocking so we switched to one and came back at half time when it was sorted.

Overall we found TV3 very dynamic, engaging, emotive words like that.

Quick comment though, Richard Loe and Andrew Mehrtens spent a fair bit of time bickering with each other so to be honest we preferred the actual commentators on TV1.  Maori has been really good with this but they're just losing out given they're not in HD or 5.1

No way. TV One was crisp HD. TV3 looked like it was SD upconverted. Don't recall TV3 having any HD badge either.

Personally I'm watching the coverage on Maori TV as their commentators are head and shoulders about TV1 and TV3, plus there is something right about a Maori introduction before the haka.

Tv3 never put up an HD watermark. They always put up a small HD 5.1 logo for a few seconds at the start of any HD show.
Mehrtens sounded like he had a cold or something. Love hearing the sub when the ball gets kicked.

I started out watching on TV3 in MySkyHDi box but found the commentary way too loud and not able to hear the crowd to well.
This is just on normal TV speakers.
Switched to TV1 and sound was much better but also noticed the picture quality wasn't as good as TV3.
Sort of blurred at times on close up shots with movement but far away shots were fine.

+1 Maori TV all the way. Started watching them in the knock-out rounds and have stayed with them since.   Awesome picture quality, and laugh out loud friendly and educated (mostly) commentary

Flicked over to Maori tv for a while but the jump back to SD was just too tough once you've started watching HD pictures.

+1 again.  On Saturday we were somewhere with satellite coverage only, which levels the playing field.  Maori easily won out.  The commentary is very good and the style is appealing too.

Unfortunately (for Maori TV) when back to terrestrial coverage it comes down to TV1 or TV3 in our house.

TV3 was definately HD.

With some funky changes I actually ended up watching the TV3 HD video, TV1 5.1 sound with the centre channel disabled and had the audio from Maori TV for the commentary as I still love Keith Quinn's commentary. Peter Fitzsimons did get a bit annoying at times though!

I'm not sure what TV3 you were catching but the picture quality was head and shoulders above TV1 on my setup. The best example was to look at the grass, the post processing TV1 used and excessive sharpening made this look really bad.
