Hi,

My parents recently brought a "Samsung LA40D550" from Lower Hutt Harvey Norman's.

My father and I plugged it in and set it up correctly (or so we think). We have both chosen the "Ditigal Channels only" and "Analouge and Digital Channels" option but this does not seem to make a difference

The problem is -

The only (major) channels that we Do Not get via a digital source is TV1 and TV2. The other channels such as TV3, C4, Prime are fine. This is not a big issue for them as they have MySky and they will use that for 99% of their viewing except when Captions is required.

Is the problem the aerial as we suspect? Also some of the channels are not listed (as I/we prefer) in 'order' (TV1/TV2/TV3/C4/Maori?/Prime etc)

Side Note:

I am looking to get a Samsung LA40D6003 in my room but will not have access to Sky so I 'think' that I will experience the same issue as they currently have.

Cheers and TIA :D

It sounds like your aerial isn't aligned correctly or has a bad cable.

Stupid question.
Are you using a UHF antenna?

You are obiously receiving only two of the three muxes on Freeview.
As above, check your antenna and co-ax.
You should have a correctly polarised UHF antenna (chuck out any VHF) and co-ax in good condition.
Check your signal strength on each mux via the sets menu.

Just come up to stay with the in-laws in their new place. They hadn't been able to tune FreeviewHD (but have  cable TV). I found there was a masthead amp but no power supply plugged in. Probably not your problem since you get 2/3 muxes.

I reckon a "Sticky" post about freeview receptiion would be handy on the freeview forum as this sort of query pops up quite a lot.

Digital TV broadcasts are different to analogue in that the signals are multiplexed.
If you think of the old analogue channels there was one channel with one program on it.

With digital one 'channel'/frequency can carry multiple TV stations.

So the frequency (or if you want to think of it like the old 'channel' terminology) that TV1 goes out on under freeview also carries TV2/U and TVNZ7.

There is one frequency/multiplex that TV3/Four/C4/TV3+1 broadcast on.

And Maori TV and Parialment etc go out on another multiplex/channel/frequency.

(If I have my channel grouping slightly wrong - sorry - just trying to explain the concept of multiplexing).

What you are describing RedNZ is that one of the signals is not being picked up and as a result there are a bunch of TV stations on that mux (short for multiplex) that you arent picking up. You cant pick up just some of the stations on a mux - its either an all or none situation Im afraid...

The other issue with digital TV is that if the signal is good enough it will work perfectly - as soon as you get to a marginal signal it just doesnt work at all.

Sounds like your UHF aerial needs a bit of moving around - probably not quite pointing in the right direction.

Update -

I brought the TV, spoke again with my father about this issue.

When I first installed and setup the TV it only received 4 Digital Channels under the 'Digital Only' option.

I knew this was incorrect and chose the 'Analouge and Digital' option whereby it found the normal channels. However, again TV1 and TV2 were poor quality and the majority of the other channels image were 'scrambled' or pixelated (sp?) as the picture continued.

I fiddled with the cord and it had mixed to positive results. TV1 (except some brief stuttering/pixelation/scrambled picture when first switching) is all but perfect

TV2/TV3/FOUR/C4/Prime - constant stuttering/pixelation/scrambled pictures but also times when it is very occasional. Not sure why it flips in between the two

I will look at it again tomorrow but so far I think everyone about is right. IF I am correct my 'signal' is split with those in the lounge and the rest of the house. At the moment I think I will try to organize someone to come and fix/look at my problem.

@B1GGLZ - I believe so

Had TV guy up today.

Fixed reception by replacing main cable between antenna and TV, new amp and antenna slightly realigned.

All perfect :)

Thanks for the help
