You should have asked that question this time last week, Noel Lemmings were selling Tivo's for $200, twin tuner, record 2 channels at once, transfer videos to/from the tivo via your PC and other tivo's on the same network.

They are still selling them at $300.

If you want a freeview APPROVED receiver you can't get one that records as freeview won't approve recivers that record, although there are lots of different freeviw COMPTAIBLE receivers avaliable that do record

what are these then Cool
http://www.freeviewnz.tv/equipment-installation/approved-products.aspx

"All Freeview approved recorders have been fully tested and meet the following standards:
  • Record a show while watching another
  • Pause live TV
"

unfortunately $300 is to much for me, just for the added rec function.
Thanks anyway.

I guess your right, maybe it has to do with the ability to share over a network

Freeview does allow recording, but is decidedly miffed about such niceties as a) shifting the recording to non-proprietary machines/codecs i.e. your PC and youtube and; b) skipping adverts.

I won't recommend HTPC, since you have/had a bad experience, but my MythTV HTPC box (with Hauppauge HVR-2210 tuners) is the duck's nuts and far exceeds what any off-the-shelf box can do with Freeview|HD.

They are approved PVR's - not just STB's with USB capability. Because of the DRM requirements imposed on broadcasters by content owners they have to ensure some minimum standards are met, even if they don't necessarily agree with them.
