Hi, just three questions below if comment is available..

There doesn’t seem to be much new since before Christmas when it comes to satellite PVR receivers. Was hoping for some new or some improvements on current models but seems quiet, a bit like the lull before a storm. Maybe some might be able to comment on –

Why is it that (correct me if I’m wrong, as I could be) in the primary offering of the UltraPlus PVR satellite receivers 9200HD/900HD/720HDMI/780micro that they do not support Series Link recording. I would have thought/hoped this would be a software/firmware upgrade and would be a popular feature to include. “Certainly, if they suggest to be ahead of the rest…”

Is the 720HDMI a downgrade from the 700HDMI as there is no card slot in the 720 model. Has this 700 unit gone, just so the 9-series can be sold at a higher cost?

If you have an older satellite UltraPlus model and you need downloaded upgrades to it (that might not be kept up-to-date on New Zealand web sites) – where do you go to find that update? Or do most supported updates stop being made 3-15 months after distribution in NZ stops on a model.

Thanks for any comment.

With my X-9200 the nearest thing to a "series-link" recording facility is when you find a programme name on the EPG that you want to record again, you can with the press of a button, search for all instances of that programme anme and set them to record.

The problem here is that the EPG in NZ is no more than a week or so so this mehtod wont catch episodes after that period.

Better to set the programme up and choose the option to record it weekly, or whatever ferquency it plays.

Series linking is done on freeview recorders via the MHEG5 epg (to the best of my knowledge) so you'll not find it on a non freeview approved unit like any ultraplus unit.

The exception would be TIVO who generate their own EPG.

I would have thought an interim measure could have been implemented, based on the program name and keywords etc if nothing else.

Personally I don't think you want a single tuner PVR. If you can't get freeview HD then you're unlikely to have a TV with a satellite tuner built in.

Series link is a new feature in the latest UltraPlus firmware. Firmware support has been excellent extending to almost 2 years now for older models.
The PVR market is mature now and I wouldn't expect new models to be released as frequently as in the past (this is from all manufactures) and that also goes for new firmware.

INJUISED – thx for that – is it the Dish TV S7070R satBox you are referring to for the series link function?

If so do you know if it is shipping yet?  (wonder if they will have a card reader slot as well)

GUSTOV – interesting but note below where Heyhey is suggesting a solution for you too.. maybe

JAXSON – if UltraPlus is a non-approved Freeview receiver then maybe the tide has changed and Ultraplus might have found a solution.  Do you know if the VU+/Uno ect have series link?  Asking that as they may also be a non-approved freeview unit. (just guessing on that one)

HEYHEY – I see there might be some hope on this Series Link thing – which models will support it (i.e. 9200HD/900HD/720HDMI/780micro/other..)?

If they, all or other are supporting the series link are all retailers currently shipping with this firmware.

Which makes me ask which models exactly “and” is the new firmware sold and stable as I note a lot of “new firmware coming” and “how do I get back to the old firmware as this new one is not stable” on the Austech site.  Also good to hear that software upgrades for older models but “still” no mention of an overseas update site for the models…

Lastly, anyone heard anything in regards to the question above regarding the 720HDMI and the 700HDMI?

Thanks again for the input so far.

Dkeeper: Do you know if the VU+/Uno ect have series link?  Asking that as they may also be a non-approved freeview unit. (just guessing on that one)

YES!  They do now, courtesy of a new image from VIX that I have been using for the past month or so.

I got some help from the Australian distributor of the Vu+ units because the NZ importer has stopped supporting them.  He provided me with an image from VIX and then connected remotely into my Vu+ Duo to install the correct files for Optus D1, OSCam etc, etc.

Unlike the original PLI image that came with the unit, the VIX image has a function called "Auto Timers" which basically searches the EPG for a programme title matching the one you want to record.  You can set it to search more than one channel if you like, and it will look within a 3-hour window by default, so when Daylight Saving finishes, it won't be a problem any more for programmes on BBC World which are broadcast according to GMT-based schedules.  And when a series finishes, it will no longer keep blindly recording at the same time slot, in the way that the PLI image used to do.

When the Auto Timer finds a match, it creates a one-off record timer, the same as what you could set up manually in the PLI image.  Record Timers which have been completed disappear from the list the next day, so the whole system functions very much as Series Link does on MySky, but is smarter and much easier to see what is going on.

Obviously, you cannot expect the Aussie distributor of Vu+ units to do this for nothing, so you may have to negotiate a fee with him, in the case of an existing unit which you wish to upgrade.  However, if you order a new unit from Craig, I expect it would come with the same VIX image installed that I am using.

For anyone still undecided as to the merits of Vu+ Duo vs. other receivers, it is definitely worth looking again, now that the Series Link issue has been resolved.

I should point out that Vu+ Duo is definitely in the "Non Freeview Approved" category, which suits me just fine, as it can do all sorts of clever stuff like ad-skipping, and receiving Australian channels such as SBS 1/2/3/HD.  I have a 2TB Hard Drive fitted to mine, and the recording capacity is huge, even for HD channels which take about 5GB per hour.

Heyhey - which firmware version of the UltraPlus X-9200 offers series link?

I'm using what I understand to be the latest firmware v2.10.11 and am not aware of the series link feature on that, but perhaps you can clarify.

I have the same firmware and I havent found the series link option either.  Maybe I will have to look deeper.  It is a great unit and with this firmware, my goflex 1tb drive works without locking up the unit. I can now play my multimedia files on this unit.  After trying a few different makes over the years, I can say for me, this is the best unit around

I have installed a test version of an upcoming firmware release and I can say so far it is looking very good.   It has free tv internet tv + as earlier versions but it also has internet radio and that works very well as have tried that.  This definitely has series record and I have set it to do series on some daily programs so will give an idea in a few days how it is going.
So far I really like this version. My media files still work and dont lock the machine like earlier versions used to.

So does this mean the UltraPlus 720HDMI and the 780 micro will not do series link recording
and
I wonder why the 700HDMI unit has not been promoted, has it gone off the market (think it had a card reader built in it.

Hi, the S/W of F9000/980HD is 1xxx and not 2xxx and it will stay as it is . We are awaiting the next S/W update if it would be possible to include series link function also in these models.

UltraPower...  maybe I can't spell.. but you did NOT address the question - it was about the UltraPlus 720HDMI and the 780 micro models.
