Hi Everyone,

I came across an interesting speed test website which checks the latency speeds for Azure blob storage at different geo-locations.
The website is http://azurespeedtest.azurewebsites.net/

With the new data centers in Australia now open I assumed that they would be the lowest latency connections - however they weren't even close ...

I imagine this mostly comes down to the ISPs and how they route traffic, however I have tried this both at work (Vodafone) and home (Slingshot) and got similiar results.

I thought it might be interesting to see what other people also get as it might help when planning what data center to base your Azure instances in.

Attached shows my result at work on Vodafone.

I heard a grumble recently from someone who set up a Remote Desktop server in Sydney on Azure expecting the performance to be stellar, and it was for him, but for the client on a Vodafone connection the response was rubbish. Investigation showed that Vodafone were routing Aussie traffic via the US. Nuts.

I tested this recently and had major differences between Chrome and IE. IE put the Australian DCs at the top while Chrome put Asia at the top.

This is from the same laptop at the same time.

I had the exact same result between IE and Chrome, I'm using Snap btw.
I don't really know why though because I do not have any extension on Chrome that would redirect the requests in any way...

Yea that's weird. I'm getting better performance to South East Asia over Australia on Orcon. What is their peering like? Orcon peer at Equinix Sydney for example which seems a logical place for Microsoft to peer?

I moved ISPs partly because of stupid routing from Vodafone. Slingshot may do something similar - best ask them about their routing.

Extremely odd here too... IE/Firefox same (Australia), Chrome (with uBlock/Lastpass/Pushbullet) Asia over Australia.

Wow you're right, here I was bagging Spark GIS but switched over to IE and the numbers look almost as good as Snap

Confirmed here too, Chrome has Aus lower down in the ranks whereas it is top in IE.
On 200/200 fibre with UberGroup.

Yeah i've seen chrome be a pig recently, Speedtest.net at high speeds result in chrome pushing 400-500mbit top's where IE and Firefox hit 1gbit+

This test puts me 200ms+ and Asia best, IE is 40ms and AU

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

there are a few of these sites, and they are not all that accurate. they should probably be shut down... Also remember that this is application latency in any case, not network latency, and it also depends on what browser you are using and the specs of your pc to process the tests.

I get ~ 33ms to my azure hosted website from where I am right now(*), and the speedtest gives me ~33Mbps upload/download.
Right now, that azure speedtest site shows 118ms latency in IE, 202ms latency in Chrome.

(*) i'm on a fibre connection at cliftons in majestic tower in wellington.

After seeing the post about different results in IE I tested again on both Vodafone (work) and Slingshot (home) and can confirm that the results are remarkably better with IE than chrome on the same machine.
Both of the Australian sites and the CDN were getting about 40ms on the Vodafone connection using IE.
Maybe Chrome hardcodes some DNS or something ...

As mentioned these tests are not definitive but are interesting none the less.
