It must be something to do with how our IT department have it set up. We have massive reliability problems with all of our equipment and software so I think there are some deeper systemic issues.

It still doesn't change the fact that if I had a conventional desk phone then it would mitigate the problem somewhat.

What's a conventional desk phone? The analog network is dead.

Teams for PSTN calling works fine, but there are a few Teams handsets out there that are just rubbish. Polycom CCX 400s is what I've dealt with, were fine with S4B, but in Teams mode they are crap. Polycom and Microsoft point the finger at each other.

Dump the desk phone and use teams on mobile/desktop will result in a much better experience.

Pretty much. A crap VOIP deployment is going to be just as bad, or worse, as a crap Teams deployment.

I had to use my MITEL deskphone today when Teams went down, had dust on it. I had to call someone from aussie i usually talk to on Teams, took me 4 attempts, firstly forgot how to get a line out, then forgot aussie numbers needed a 0061, (was looking for the +61) then miss dialed the number. It was a painful experience. Pretty sure that's the first time in 2 years ive used that phone.

Oh no, we can't have meetings for a few hours. How sad.

I find Teams quite reliable. I don't use the phone feature, just chat, document management, and a large number of video calls.

Well, for a large percentage today. None of those functions you mention actually worked

only calls. Thus Meetings. But not much else.

We went through the 'dump the desk phone' thing at work but it seems the IT people didn't think it through 100%. One thing that happens from time to time is the MS authentication system gets its' knickers in a knot and my account locks me out. No problem you say, just phone IT to have your account unlocked.

Yeah right, on my soft phone, which is on my PC........... which I can't unlock.

True. One solution you have no doubt thought of is to use your cellphone, either calling a public phone number or maybe even putting a soft phone on there.

Sometimes it's that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. It's probably cheaper and lower maintenance, works from any location, but has drawbacks like this.

I frequently have to use my personal mobile to call the IT department and ask them to fix my computer because it is too broken for me to be able to call them from the computer itself. As far as I'm concerned I should be getting an employer subsidy for my personal phone usage.

I don't have a work cell phone and although I'd like to have a separation of church and state, over the years my personal number has escaped and I receive work related calls on my personal phone, even out of hours sometimes.

I already have to use my personal phone for work related 2FA so calling IT in the above scenario shows the wedge is well and truly in. :-)

The thing that gets me is that there's a big assumption that the employee has a cell phone (eg for 2FA), and obviously EVERYONE does (or they couldn't work, right?). What happens if that phone fails, as mine did recently?

Bingo. I broke my phone a few months ago - during "work from home if you can" - and asked IT what the process is for people who don't have a phone. "Uhhh... I'll ask my manager". The manager had no idea. I ended up having to 'work' off a tiny laptop instead of being able to remote in from my desktop. It certainly wasn't ideal.

During the week or so that it took for my new phone to arrive, I became acutely aware of the number of companies that blindly assume you have one.

If you have zero other method to contact your support desk I'd think that's more a policy/training issue than a technology one.

I'm trained enough to remember the help desk phone number, but I dont have a deskphone to call them on..... is that still a training issue?

Anyway, I'm big enough to realise cutting off my own nose is not a great way to spite the company face.

The last time it happened at work, I walked upstairs and had a nice chat to my help desk colleague, told him why I couldn't call, and his response was ' ohhhh, I never thought of that'.

OK so you can walk up to your helpdesk if it's an issue rather than call from your teams?

I'm guessing if you were working out of office you could call the helpdesk from an alternative phone too?

The point is that the employer is not providing an alternative phone. They are relying on the employee to use their own equipment at their own cost, in which case they should be subsidising that employee's personal phone connection.
