Google Apps provides Activesync support for mobile devices, and with Google Apps Premier edition (US$50 per year) you can get an Outlook connector, which I believe is based on MAPI.

Ahh okay.

I wasnt planning on owning my own domain name, but maybe now I might..

Not to keen on the outlook connector though, I do have a Mac too.

I think I've found a new provider I might go with.

Owning your own domain name is the best thing you can do for email. It gives you full portability for as long as you keep your domain renewed. No more dependence on any one provider, and no more having to send out "change of email address" emails.

Yeah, i know, but I dont really have that problem now. I use my @clear.net.nz address, and have had the exchange provider change the FROM address to my @clear.net.nz address (which might I add, is a life long address)

But I see your point, I just see it as another cost, thats all.

Am looking into it now though.. Have no idea what I should use as a domain name haha.

Aaroona: Hey sbiddle, could you please answer my question above? Very interested.

My Exchange provider can crawled to snail-mail tonight, I'm lucky to get 10kb/s transfer rate, sending OR receiving.

I've never noticed any speed issues with Sherweb, just as a test using OWA I downloaded a few 2-4MB files at around 270KB/sec that were still ramping up in speed when they finished. Syncing with Outlook has always been fast.

Getting most Exchange providers to "spoof" an outbound header would be a mission. In all honesty I just don't understand why people use ISP addresses.

Ahh okay, yeah.

It was more or less just a fall back for me, more than anything. So if I decide later on I dont want to use exchange, I can just cancel exchange without issue of changing the address.

But with a domain it doesn't matter where your mail is. You can set your MX records to point to any provider and most also support simple email forwarding with a catchall on the domain.

Why bother with an Exchange then if your email is still on your ISP? Surely when someone replies to you it won't go to your Exchange inbox, but to your ISP?

Or are you thinking of doing a POP from the ISP mail into Exchange? Most providers don't do it.

Go with your own domain. It costs a lot less than your iPhone and can be yours for a longer time.

Clear allow you to basically use your mailbox as a mask, so the moment you send an email to email@clear.net.nz, its moved to user@otherdomail.com - so I don't use their mailbox at all, other than the email address as a mask.

Atm, my email costs are NZD$9 a month.

So anything I do will be a bit more, which im going to have to accept if I want better performance.

You should really get your own domain name if you're serious about email. An NZ address will cost around $30 a year (although this is dropping soon) or a .com address can be picked up for almost nothing if you shop around. It's quite liberating getting email delivered to your own domain name as you're not tied into any particular email provider or ISP.

Yup... getting your own domain is the best thing you'd do for yourself for your emails... I had mine years ago and never depended on ISP's email address ever!

Now I have like 4 domains.

@Stuart, I didn't get far with Kinetics as I told them I'd consider again in 9months time due to other commitment with life and didn't want to make hasty decision with BPOS. Beside, I might gather few interests with other (interested) GZers for pooled service on BPOS.

@Stuart Oh! I will have to chat with ya on that then... I'm keep for Hosted Exchange but would love 3CALs only but might round up few guys together so we meet min of 5 CALs.

Tell me, there can be several "admins" and each be "delegated" to maintain a set of domains right? Just need a primary Windows Live ID to register, isn't it?

You can have several admins and you can have several domains, but you can't delegate administration to just one domain. In other words there would need to be some trust between the admins in the account. I'll check the doco again to see if you can enable some level of security between the domains, but there would still be at least one primary admin who would be able to access/modify any of the domains.
