Just noticed they released the new outlook.com preview a few days ago, basically the eventual replacement for windows live hotmail and a competitor to gmail

I use gmail for my main personal email at the moment but this looked interesting so I upgraded an an old hotmail address I had to to the new system, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.

It's pretty nice, well done Microsoft.

Hope they add IMAP support and let us point domains directly at it down the line.

Why bother with IMAP when Hotmail, aka Windows Live, now outlook.com, provides a raft of different connection options for accessing not just your email, but also Contacts and Calendars.

I've been using the old Windows Live service for some time with my private email domain and depending on the family member we have been using one of: activesync to a variety of mobiles devices (android, iphone, Windowsphone), the Windows Live email client for Windows, the Office Outlook Connector (variously called the Hotmail connector) add-in - which delivers a very "Exchange-like" experience, or just good old webmail with the Hotmail interface into my domain email. The ability to set up and use shared family calendars for keeping track of people and events has been great.

I realise if you are living in a Linux or Apple world that some of the above won't apply, but even activesync to a smartphone device is enough to make it a very rewarding experience.

Outlook.com is just a skin over hotmail

If you visit on a mobile device you get the mobile hotmail site.

Not a fan of the Windows Live email client.

Outlook.com and hotmail.com both support EAS which is > IMAP and POP. If you have the outlook client on your desktop then EAS!

Also outlook.com and hotmail.com both support bringing your custom domain via Windows live admin center.

By end of August, they mentioned that mobile site, skydrive and calendar will also get the new 'metro' interface upgrade.

You can upgrade your existing @hotmail/@msn/@live address to @outlook.com address or choose a new @outlook.com address while your current will be setup as an alias so you can still continute to recieve emails from old email name. You can also create a @outlook.com alias too if you do not wish to upgrade your @hotmail address to new @outlook address. You are allowed to create 5 alias's/year.

Edit - Word of caution for Windows phone users, if you upgrade your existing Windows live ID to a new @outlook.com address that you signed in with in your windows phone when you first set it up, you will need to hard reset your phone else marketplace, apps settings, facebook integrattion etc will stop working. You can use an app from marketplace called ;reinstaller' to quickly reinstall the apps but settings will not come back.

Do whatever you want to do man.
