Friend of mine runs a fairly small hostel. They currently run a system where you buy a code for 50/100MB what ever. More and more their competition has free wifi for guest, so they would like to get into this.

They are looking for a system which is fairly open but at the same time will not allow torrenting or other large data downloads, also they want the ability for a client to be kicked off the network automatically after half an hour.

I would like to keep this as simple as possible, the owner is not overly tech savvy and I don't want to be on site every 5 minuets fixing it, the budget is really not there for an enterprise grade solution.

I was thinking of using something along the lines of a Ubquiti Power AP but maybe I should be looking at a box that can run the likes of Tomato and do something fancy with that.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

"Free" WiFi is dangerous - make sure it's free, but limited to a certain amount per day, and block traffic that's not used by known protocols, in special torrents.

Some of the WiFi Hotspot solutions around allow for management and billing. Your friend could issue free tickets and hand them out when asked for access.

Yeap hence the need for something with a bit more control. I know Zyxel do an all in one for around the $1500 mark but I think that's going to be out of budget to be honest.

If you want simplicity your best bet is to go with an extablished hotspot provider like Tomizone.

Maybe something like this?:

All you need is a Linksys or TP-Link Router.

Was posted on Geekzone a couple of weeks ago and I'm using it for our hotspot now and it's working great.
They have the option of offering 30mins/30MBs or 1hour/100MB for free per device per day.
I've got the 30/30 option turned on on our hotspot.

You can also print out your own access vouchers and make up the time/data and give them away.
At least that way you still have some control of the system.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

What system do they have now?

Why not just give away the 50/100MB tickets to guests, then you have some control over
a) Who is using the network,
b) Large files and torrent downloads are discouraged by a 100MB limit until you need another ticket
