Hi

I need a site or portal built that people can log into securely and upload some photos for my design work.

On the backend I can see and edit the photos and then have them in dated folders etc for them to fetch once Ive completed them.

Any ideas?

Are you after something that has some editing facility as part of the portal backend, or simply that lets you download the image, edit it in some external program, then upload the edited image in place of the original ready for the user?

Yes I will just download the images work on them then re upload them for the people to fetch.

If you can host your own webserver, then look into ownCloud.

You can just enable the storage part/module. Create your own users.

Internet is my backyard...

followed by simple Upload new photos and perhaps ability to title the photos with a tag

After logging in they would see something like this

Typical project like this could be between $2000-$9000, or ~30-40 hours at anywhere between $50-150/hr (depending on the developers rates of course).

At this price range you're mostly paying for development or customization/config and the "design" would be an pre done off the shelf template (there are quite a lot of fairly decent ones ones but you risk having the same design as someone else) or a framework like bootstrap with customized of colours and logos (which while looks professional, can look a bit generic).

You always need a bit more than you think even for a basic site, for what you describe for v1 I'd flesh it out as:

Public facing:
Home
Login
Register
About, Terms, Privacy
Contact
Sitemap

Logged in as User:
Edit Account
Upload Image
Edit Image (eg: to change Title, add a new version etc)
Search/Browse My Images
Download My Images

Logged in as Admin:
User Management
Create, Edit, Approve, Delete/Disable
Image Management
Create, Edit, Approve, Delete/Disable

.. then of course later after this project is done v2 you'd probably want to do some kind of online pricing/ordering and export to your accounting software to save you data entry time.

ownCloud has really come along since I last looked at it but might be too a broad/generic tool for this guys case.

If you're a designer, you can probably do all the design work yourself and just get a coder to add the database, secure login and required scripting behind it.

I used to do some work with a graphic designer where he would do an HTML template and make everything look nice, then had it to me and I would code all the rest in PHP.

If you can do the design, you can probably save a lot of money getting someone to write the dynamic code behind it.

Would have thought a a CMS like wordpress could do something like this with the right plugin. Or maybe Joomla or Drupal.

Joomla would do it fine. Even something like exavault would do the trick. The sky is the limit.... The limit is your budget..... ha. Just made that up. I wonder if it has been said before....

Take a look at exavault. You can brand it and have granular access. It would also be a simple setup and cheap.

Well i had considered using freelancer.com as someone in India would build it cheaply as I dont have much to spend initially, my only concern was support should something go wrong with the site then it would be easier having support here in NZ.

If you want a photo site then look at http://www.smugmug.com there is a few of us photographers around here that use this.

Im thinking something like Dropbox might be the cheapest option and assigning Folders and rights to individual customers.

Its not nearly as professional as a website but less headache and money

Did you check out exavault? Similar to Dropbox but with a slant on what you want to do.
