I have a small issue with my email services. The short of it is when at home I can receive emails no problem but when at work I get Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.xxx.com responded: Authentication failed. Using Thunderbird

Up until yesterday emails were working fine at the office using Thunderbird. A staff member was trying to set up a new email account on a machine and got locked out too many attempts logging on the server, I cleared the lock out but then all the systems using Thunderbird in the office got the same email error.

Here is the key thing I took mine home and it worked fine, I took it back to the office and I get the sending of password error.

Have rebooted the router but still no luck, have checked and double cheked the hosting server its not blocked and I can see our website fine so we are not locked out.

None of the machines using thunderbird were reset like I said earlier mine was fine then we had the lockout cleared it and then the email trouble started.

Any one got any ideas??

Hi JAGGZ

If it says authentication failed, it won't be lying to you.  Either the information is not entered into your mail client correctly (unlikely given you have multiple machines whose settings have presumably not changed), or the password has been changed or there is still a lockout of some sort.  Possibly your IP address has been blacklisted on the outgoing mail server.

I think you'll have to get hold of the provider and get them to check.

In the meantime you should be able to use the outgoing mail server of the ISP you are connected to.  e.g. smtp.vodafone.co.nz, smtp.orcon.co.nz, etc.  www.smtp2go.com is a 3rd party service we recommend regularly for travelers stuck on POP/SMTP email setups.

Also:  Consider whether you should be upgrading to Hosted Exchange or similar so your email is backed up online.

Happy to assist in a professional capacity if you need it.

Good luck
Mike

Hi Mike

Cheers thanks for your input very good points there, we have access to the server in WHM although I had cleared ldf and csf in WHM, I just had another thought to checking cPHulk Brute Force Protection in WHM I flushed the cPHulk Brute Force database and added the IP address to the white list for good measure. Will give it a try again in the morning.

Sending email is not a problem although if flushing the cPHulk Brute Force database and white listing the IP address does not work I might have to follow your next possibility and follow through with checking the SMTP block list although if that was the case I would not be able to send out, or would I??

Hosted Exchange or similar we use Google Apps on another domain we were just a bit slow in setting it up for this domain when they changed their services from free to paid however Outlook.com looks good.
