while we do hear about failed IT projects in private sector, why is that governments seem to excel at screwing up big and being unresponsive (Novopay?)

Serious flaws in MyGov site exposed millions of Australian private information.

It looks almost like they used the same crew who wrote Wheedle 1.0...

I spend a little time in Aussie (and read the papers) and have rellies in the Public Service over there - reasonably high up on the IT side of things.

The wastage over the past decade that I have seen and heard of is astronomical.  Money poured into projects that are eventually abandoned, projects that were promised to be money makers that lose hand over fist, projects badly scoped that fail to get a result despite millions spent.  That seems to be almost normal in Australia, and nobody is accountable.

They have had is pretty sweet with the mining boom for so long that they have got sloppy and wasteful IMHO.
