Wordpress installs on my client's Webdrive account fine, but I have the old problem with file permissions/owners for media uploads and plugins. Dir permissions are as per WP guidelines: 755 for dirs and 644 for files.

Webdrive support suggested setting the directory owner to the web server user (nobody) which helped for media uploads to wp-content but doesn't seem to help with plugin installations. Wordpress still asks for ftp details each time an install or update is run.

Anybody got a properly configured Webdrive Wordpress install?

To my knowledge, wordpress is suppose to ask you every time for FTP credentials when doing updates or plugin installs - it doesn't keep the credentials for security reasons.

Wordpress can indeed automatically install plugins and themes if the permissions are correct.

This stackoverflow post has a good explanation: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/640409/can-i-install-update-wordpress-plugins-without-providing-ftp-access

B
asically you need to have /wp-content writable by the webserver.

I've always found Webdrive web hosting difficult to use so YMMV.

CMSes like Wordpress (and others) need the virtualhost run as the same user as the files. Unless you are able to FTP your files as the same user as the web server (not recommended) it doesn't work properly.

The only good solution is to use an Apache module like MPM-ITK and set each virtualhost with (different) user permissions to match their FTP account.

This is what I do for all my clients running CMSes and it works fine for them.

You can also run a WordPress(*) site using Azure Websites out of Australia now - just a few clicks to set up :)

There is a free tier to get you started if you like... up to 10 sites, 1GB disk, 165MB/day bandwidth - then a basic tier which gives you 10GB disk, first 5GB outbound bandwidth free (then about $1.70 per 10GB thereafter).

(*) also drupal, joomla, kentico, umbraco, ghost, and many more :-)

I used to use shared hosting on Webdrive for wordpress and the performance was shocking. Switching to GoDaddy was heaps cheaper and the site now performs far better.
