I have most of my domains with an offshore registrar, and now I need a few .co.nz domains. It works out a bit cheaper to use a NZ based registrar for .co.nz domains, so that's an advantage. Also, pumping money into NZ is always good. But would there be many other reasons to use a NZ-based registrar? Maybe it would help a bit if there was a domain name dispute or something? Just a guess.

https://metaname.net - offers DNSSEC + V6 Glue along with many other features, Christchurch based, pretty good on pricing and they've got a really good, straight to the point web panel. I've been using them for years and have found them to be awesome for everything including support as they also have implemented a few features I asked for in their panel really quickly.

You're also supporting a local company in this case (if you go with the likes of Metaname).

The main one for me would be support. It's not often you need support with domains, but when you do, it's important that the supplier is quick and knowledgeable.

I'd also recommend only having one registrar, up until recently we had two. Consolidated everything to one NZ registrar, plugged into their API for invoicing and renewals and now it's all hands off (we have approx 200 domains for clients and internal use).

I actually negotiated with my new registrar for them to transfer all our domains from the incumbents for no charge. Worth discussing with your new provider IMO.

I have ~40 domains with Metaname as well. I've never had problems with them in the past. They will also do DNS for the domains for free

The website is not all fancy like the other registrar's but it does the job and works well.

A .nz domain follows the NZ DNC rules so any dispute you have will be addressed in NZ via http://www.dnc.org.nz

I use 1stdomains, been quick to answer the couple of queries I have had.

Still have to get around to getting them the stuff they want to change the name on one of the domains from an ex business partner to me but I understand the hassle in changing names on .nz ones is a thing that all .nz registrars have to do.

Depends on what tld;s you want. 101domain is where I have the rest of mine that are not .nz because they have all the awesome weird tld's available.

Just a random observation, but i see domain squatters/speculators using metaname as a registrar. Is the service that good that they also see an advantage using this company?

Or should i be wary about searching for a domain name through metaname in the off chance it suddenly becomes unavailable?

Metaname offer monthly billing so you don't have to buy a full year, you can just have a domain for a month. Thats why you'll be seeing squatters on them. Also, domain squatting is a dick move so please don't do it :)

Name searches are not shared with third parties other than by necessity with the registries themselves. Metaname has no particular affiliation with any of our customers and was formed in part to provide a registrar that does *not* engage in such shady practices. As Michael says, monthly billing is likely a draw card for domainers.

Hi another question please, do you know how people are able to register domain names the instant they come available? I'm talking about someone registering a .nz domain name the moment it comes out of resolved status in the middle of the night. I understand companies like crazydomains, expireddomains etc. register expired domains on your behalf, but i haven't seen anything like that for a newly available .nz domain.
