Hi all,

 

We have a Server 2012 R2 that needs to be configured to allow Dial-Up VPN access via the RRAS role.

 

A couple of employees have laptops with Windows 10 Home editions, and therefore won't be able to join the existing AD domain.

 

Does this mean that they will be unable to use the VPN? I had hoped that I'd be able to setup standard AD user accounts for them and grant dial-up permission in there?

Sorry for the late reply. 

 

Windows Server RRAS role does not require the connecting laptop to be on the domain. Once you have installed and configured the RRAS role and all associated firewall and router rules/permissions the end user just needs to add a VPN Connection via Windows Settings (found via Settings, Network & Internet). This asks the user for a username and password (use the format domain\user). Once connected that Windows 10 will be able to access everything on your network that you have allowed their username/password to access.

 

 

 

Security Warning
Do note that this technically allows anyone with a valid username and password to connect any computer internally to your network and is a high security risk. Whilst I wont go into any heavy detail on how to do it, i highly recommend using NPS (Network Policy Services) and only allowing domain joined laptops to visit your network. Allowing any non domain joined PC to join and browse your network opens up the risk of virus, malware and/or security incidents.
