Hey IT pros! Can anyone give me some advice on purchasing a domain which is held by 'buydomains.com'. Any precautions that should be taken?

Is there a risk that if my client goes directly to the vendor that they might look at the size of their company and decide that they can actually afford a bit (or a lot) more and start bumping up the price? What's the best way to approach this to get the best deal?

Years ago I had a client approach my old boss and ask him to secure a domain held by a scalper... and the customer also decided to approach them directly for some unknown reason.  Net result...  the customer was effectively bidding against himself for a few days and overpaid.

Don't do that.  :)

Basically, I agree with your approach unless its obvious the client is small from looking at their web site.  And remember the USA's idea of a 'small to medium business' is under 500 employees IIRC.

Is this a .nz domain or something else?

Many years ago geekzone.com was available for sale. The guys wanted US$ 15,000... I thought it would be interesting because many US sites we saying "geekzone.com" when mentioning us. Over time the price came down to US$ 5,000 and recently US$ 1,000. I offered US$ 500 but they were not interested.

Our traffic is now mainly from NZ so not so worried about the .com anymore. I see they are now renting for SEO and spammers - last month it was going to a US-based car rating website with keyword spammy articles. Now it's going to a cryptocurrency scam.

It really depends on how important the domain is for your business...

Thanks guys. This is a for .net domain and was used some years ago to establish an internal AD domain but was never registered publicly. The client is now keen to tidy up the situation to limit risk etc. The alternative is to rename/rebuild their internal AD domain (not fun).

Yes, needs tidying up. Usint actual domain names internally without registering is a risk.
