Hi Guys

I've decided to throw myself in the deep end and build a database system for family members who own kennels business. I had a access database for them that has been overhauled and converted to SQL now. Anyway the tables and links I think are alright.

I installed asp.net 3.5 SP1 and sql 2008 and managed to follow some basic instructions to get the tables showing in a web page that could edit, delete entries etc by using LINQ connections. So far basic.... Now stuck and the serious leaning kicks in (I have limited programming, sql knowledge).

I'm after advice on whether this is the easiest route to take? I am very keen to get into web developing hence why thought asp.net could be the way to go with a web application as that will give me some good knowledge.

I initially looked at access forms but is not really good enough and once the initial setup is done with customers, pets database want to branch out to include bookings (ie this customer booked this kennel for these days).

Any advice resources etc would be much appreciated.

Cheers

install and learn PHP. it's relatively quick and easy to pick up, and you'll find lots of tutorials, examples and help on the net.

here's a nice beginners tutorial: PHP Tutorial the mySQL tutorial on the same site will cover how PHP can be used in conjunction with a mySQL database.

Maybe you should take a look at a CRM, or open-source CRM system.  You can build an application to do the sort of things you want a lot easier and faster on top of an existing crm system.  Then there are also web and mobile client add-ons you can use with them too.  The bookings aspect, for example, could possibly work out-of-teh-box in the MS CRM product using the 'service calendar'.

There is also the option of using hosted CRM so it can paid for per-user, per-month and you dont have to worry about the infrastructure (servers, backups etc).

Thanks guys.

Both those options may be viable I'm a fair way down the track of building the system but if one of these options is going to save a lot of time down the track I'd seriously look at changing tact.

Know what the price is off hand for MS CRM?

Cheers

I would be looking at the PHP/MYSQL option - if you wanted to get straight into testing it download WAMP (free of course) its a programme that installs the stuff straight onto your computer.

PHP support is much easier to find the ASP due to being opensource..  As well as hosting being much more affordable on linux based servers where ASP support is not required!
