As per the subject line, I can't get a hold of my developer since he set up my site.
How can I transfer the ownership to me?
It's a .co.nz domain.
I've been editing the site myself for the last 5 years.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Do a whois lookup: https://dnc.org.nz/whois/whois-lookup/
Find out the registrar_name (and details). Contact them.
If no luck, contact DNC.
UDAI is the code you want.

Just be aware that if ownership of the domain is not in your name them there is always the possibility that you may not be able to easily transfer the domain - claiming ownership is one thing, but much like the old saying possession is nine-tenths of the law.
freitasm: Lesson (I know not what you asked but for future readers): always register the domain yourself or you will be hostage.
If someone who already has a domain, they should check it, by doing a Whois lookup, to make sure it is registered under your name in the 'registrants' field, and the email is set to you. But yes register the domain yourself, and also make sure that the domain provider has a control panel that you can always access the domain to make changes.

heavenlywild: Email and contact details are all correctly set except for the registrant name.
Registrant name is the key here. You do need to prepare yourself for the possibility that there could potentially be challenges getting the domain "back" since it's not in your name.
Anybody who owns a domain should ensure the registrant name is theirs. Letting a technical or admin contact have their name here effectively does give them control over the domain.

Basically, the domain belongs to whoever is recorded as registrant.

This sort of issue is all to common.
Company gets nephew, brother in law , student, website developer to set all this up.

heavenlywild: How would I go about that?
It would be awesome if it is possible.
You would need access to the account to request the UDAI. Or get the registrar to send the UDAI to the registered email address, which they may not do manually in case of the account holder email (not the registrant's) being compromised, etc (stupid because if the email is compromised you could change the account password and login anyway).
