I would like to send mail out from a batch file or a program via an Exchange Server. I used www.blat.net initially and it works fine for mail going to the domain users but going outside the domain Exchange complains about not being authorised to relay mail.

What should I be asking the Exchange Administrators to enable this function?  I am guessing it's some sort of anonymous access to the server which might pose a risk except the Exchange Server is behind the firewall so it cannot be accessed externally anyway.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

What version of Exchange is it?
I know, by default, Exchange 2003 allowed anonymous smtp connections from the local lan but Exchange 2007 needs to be setup to allow this.

You will need to setup a new SMTP Receive Connector if using Exchange Server 2007 (or reconfigure an existing one).

Exchange 2003 but it won't allow relaying. I get this response from my desktop

The SMTP server does not like the name fred@yahoo.com.
Have you set the 'To:' field correctly, or do you need authorization (-u/-pw) ?
The SMTP server response was -> 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for fred@yahoo.com

I'm not sure if this will help at all (I don't know much about Exchange at all), but I have used a program called mailsend to send emails via DOS batch files. Just needs a few basic parameters as described on the linked page.

Thanks but I need to send mail from the Exchange sever so it looks like it's coming from the right domain. I could use an external mail server I guess but that means opening up ports on the corporate firewall to allow traffic on the SMTP port. Plus finding a SMTP server I can use.

Ok so just to confirm - the PC sending the mail via batch file / program is on the same domain/network as the exchange server?

If so, all you should have to do is add in the IP address of the PC in quesiton to the mail relay part of exchange 2003.

Open up Exchange system manager > "your exchange server administrative group" > servers > " your server" > protocols > smtp. Double click on "default smtp virtual server", click on the "access" tab and you will see a button called "relate restrictions". You can add in the IP addess of the PC here....

Let me know how you go :)

Turned out to be a permission on the Exchange Server. Once I asked the admins to allow anonymous email from the IP address of the machine sending out mail, it was fine and all the tools mentioned worked okay.
